Default Well I never heard about that before........

Caught the end of a documentary whilst flicking through the channels about the sinking of the German ship the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945.

Wilhelm Gustloff - The Greatest Ship Disaster and Sinking in History

I've seen and read a lot of stuff about WWII and disasters and stuff and I was genuinely surprised to have never have heard about a ship being sunk with the loss of over 9000 lives Mainly women and children.

Is it just me that's missed this?

Youre missing the point: its a huge amount to lose in a ship.

Unhappy

The murderous savagery on committed by both sides on the Eastern Front even now beggars belief I suspect that, rather than being actively suppressed, this story has never really been widely told because within that conflict it wasn't particularly out of the ordinary

A figure which in turn pales into insignificance when viewed alongside the number Russians killed during WW2 by the NKVD on the orders of Stalin

Wars need to be horrific for all involved - it occasionally stops them from happening. When its all nice and detached on TV it makes it far easier to do.

People are worried about kids mixing up video games for reality - they should be more worried about politicians mixing up reality for video games.
