An amazing and powerful set of photos
I saw the photo thread recently from around the whole and wasnt that impressed TBH. However, I came across the following, and the drama and power in them is intense. I share them with you now
A Mother's Journey: 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography
These photos contain disturbing images of a young boy with terminal illness, but throughout show the positive nature of a mothers love

Apologies if they caused offense - I did describe them as powerful and intense - didnt occur to me that people would see them in a negative light, I saw it as the title says really, a story of a mothers love in terrible circumstances - have amended the original post.

As hard hitting as that is I find the images of scores of dead and injured in Gaza nightly on my TV just as diffiuclt to watch, but seems much of the Western world sees it as acceptable. It is a sad world we live in and I guess images such as these in this thread and those on the news are good in that at least they shock you into the harsh realities of the hardships many in this world have to endure.

Well I've had a crap few days lately - work problems, a few big bills to pay, car playing up, dog's been ill & down the vets, etc. etc.
Items like this rather puts it in to perspective. You need to read the commentary at the bottom to understand some of the pictures.
So I have gained something - a sense of perspective of my sh1tty week.
What an incredibly strong young man, RIP fella.

Im a parent, and I gained something watching this tragic journey. They say a picture is like a thousand words, its very true in this case. I gained humility and a huge amount of awe for the family. The mothers love shone through in every picture. I'm sure she would want others to see what she felt for her son.
I also gained a strange feeling of guilt, like some others on here who have been ill too but survived, they probably feel that too. It should make us all feel that we dont have a bad life, how ever low you feel think of this poor young boy and his family.
Thank you for posting the link.

Thats very, very hard to view
I think the mother must of been absolutly devestated at seeing those pictures showing the harrowing progression of her childs terminal illness
The thing that sticks in my mind tho, did Renee C Byer (the photographer) take these pictures for acclaim or money?
If so, to me thats massively immoral and shamefull, to become well known for showing the suffering of someone elses gradual death

Its obvious that the mother agreed with the photographs being taken, and I'm sure she must have approved with them being published. They are not the kind of image that one would make loads of money from. I would think that the parents and the photographer would be expecting that the message would be their reward. They are very powerful images
.April 20,2007 Photographer Renée C. Byer has been awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for her work in "A Mother's Journey," a series that chronicled a dying boy's final year. "In a situation like this, your instincts as a person are to try to help," she said. "But as a journalist, you have to step back and let things unfold as they naturally would. It can be very, very painful. I was documenting a story that needed to be told, and it was a gift to be allowed to be there. Throughout, I had a bigger vision that -- because of what I was witnessing -- it would bring hope to other families."
"Renée is more than an amazing photojournalist, she is good people. Rarely has the Pulitzer gone to a more deserving person

At the very least, voyeuristic or not, it might get people to put their hand in their pocket a bit more readily when someone rattles a cancer charity tin under their noses.
