PS3 Won't Play dvd's in Full Widescreen ?
I have just bought a PS3 and am wanting to watch a blue ray dvd that has come with it, trouble is it won't play it in full widescreen mode (ie there are two black strips at the top and bottom of the screen.
I have tinkered with the tv and ps3 settings but to no avail
Can anyone help :-(

you cannot change the aspect ratio on a HD-DVD/Blu-ray/DVD running thru HDMI. I noticed this when watching some films that were originally 4:3 on my Toshiba HD-DVD player and had a wee read up on it.

Your television screens aspect ratio is 1.79:1. Some movies were filmed with a broadly similar 1.85:1 aspect ratio: 'Panavision' widescreen films use a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, so youll see bars top and bottom (in the original, rather than added by the player, like you see added to a 1.85:1 DVD when watching on a 4:3 television set) watching one of these films on a widescreen TV. Could this be the issue?

Can you buy blu ray discs that are filmed in "widescreen" ?

Even though youve conceded my point, Im still not sure myself as your description is far from complete. Something filmed in an aspect ratio similar to the native aspect ratio of your TV set will be displayed fullsecreen: something filmed in a wider aspect ratio will have to display bars top on bottom, unless you expect your TV set to physically change shape?

No need for the sad face, it's not settling, it's how the films were designed to be viewed.
The Dark Knight is 2.35:1 so will show with bars top and bottom on every commercially available TV.
If you mess about with settings to fill the screen vertically, you'll loose the picture from the edges. This is not how the director wanted you to see it. Even worse if you stretch to fill.
It's like having Gordon Ramsey come round to cook you a meal and then covering it in ketchup, brown sauce, mayonnaise and salt.
Respect the artistry of the film maker.
