Could be the derailleur adjustment, or a stiff, unlubed chain (unlikely).
The cable may have slipped or "settled". Take it back and have them re-adjust it. It'll only take them 5 mins, and they won't mind.
Cheers, Nick

sounds like you may have a stiff link(s) in the chain. this will stop it bending properly around the gears / chainring,

best way to identify this is by turning the pedals (backwards) whilst you are off the bike. watch the chain as it goes around the gears and the stiff link or other problem should be easily identifiable.

if it is a stiff link its easily curable - it just needs loosening. hold the chain with one hand either side of the stiff link with your thumbs on the link. try bending the chain backwards and forwards (to and away from you). this usually works and will give you the extra little play you need in the joints

in my experience a stiff link is more likely to get stuck in the rear mech (derailluer) when pedalling backwards.

a stiff should cause problems in every gear too.

if it is a misalignment in the rear mech this should be less problematical in the middle gears

good luck

if its a new problem its more likely to be cable stretch which all new bikes suffer from.

Easiest way to test is to put the chain on the largest front cog and the smallest rear cog and then test the tension of the gear cable for the rear deurallier. It should be relatively taught, if its really slack then its slipped or stretched.

Modern STI style gear shifters rely on pulling the cable a certain distance to get the step up, if the cable is slack to start then it wont pull properly and you wont get the smooth change.

Stiff link is less common and would usually lead to a jam in the rear mech around the pulleys as the angle of turn is to great and the link jams against the pulley frame. Its not impossible though.
