I've got some PTFE tape somewhere if you think that will help.

You can also by a can of pipe-freeze so you can put a compression fitting on.

still, only in america could a burst water pipe caused people to get trapped by floods

Reminds me of that storm drain bursting on the highway in the states, that was mental!
