Any watch experts on SN?
Just been to do the last of my christmas shopping, and been thinking of buying myself another Breitling. Had one a couple of years back and regret selling it.
Narrowed it down to a Navitimer World, or a Montbrillant Legende. Prices are £4115 and £3890. Anyone have any idea what sort of price I should be looking to pay?
Without even really asking, Goldsmiths offered me the Navitimer for £3300, or £2650 and my Tag Carrera Chrono.
The Carrera is just over 2yrs old, fully boxed with papers. Should I be looking to sell this private (where?!?!) or just go for a p/x and push for a better price?
Thanks in advance for any help

selling it private will be a nightmare now. As a self appointed 'expert" i have never thought Breitling to be a good watch. For the money your spending you could have a vacheron or Jaeger . Far more class and much better made. Or a top spec Seiko for £3k etc.

I challenge you to find a better Navitimer than this for the price
1977' MINT Breitling NAVITIMER 47mm Chrono-Matic Cal.11 on eBay, also, Wristwatches, Watches, Jewelry Watches (end time 20-Dec-08 15:02:20 GMT)
Classics are the way to go if you don't want to lose a third of the value as soon as you buy it. ( unless it's a new Rolex or Pam )

Maybe I don't get watches but that stap in the ebay link looks crap.
Believe it or not, I once went to a shop, tried loads of watches on and bought the one that looked good on my wrist.

Panerai are not going to last long holding values. They are again nothing special . just happen to be fashionable last few years. Marine masters (seiko) hold value very very well and are so well made you would question why people buy Rolex.
Old pre 90's Omegas and Sinns etc do very well .
But if you gave me £3k i would buy a vacheron

nail on head !!! they have cheap movements.
seiko are far far more exclusive when you start to go High end. And as for Seikos " credor" range
CREDOR
you have to go to japan to even buy one and the quality makes Rolex look like sekonda

I was looking at a Seiko Springdrive the other week. Beautiful. Most advanced/important movement created since Heuer and Breitling (and the other one i can't remember) made the cal11 in 1969. Once you've seen a Springdrive working EVERYTHING else looks crap in comparison. Seiko are selling them at massive losses (in v limited amounts, there isn't even a dealer in London) like Bugatti do with the Veyron. A showcase of technology that is miles ahead of anything ETA/Swatch group or Rolex make. To say i want one in a slight under-statement!

they are unreal !!! But not sure about the "power reserve" dial on them. next to any Rolex they will win hands down for quality. If you have never owned a Rolex then check out how badly the bracelet are made !!!!!! the links are terrible compared to a mid price Seiko/omega etc.
I wear a 1980's Seamaster pro and the bracelet on it is far better than on a old GMT i owned.

Yeah the face of the Springdrive GMT etc look a bit dodgy, the res meter is a bit naff. I want the limted edition chrono one but cant' get hold of one in the UK
Rolex seem to think that Hollow midlinks are the way forward for some reason

I was at B'ham Goldsmiths for an hour while they were on the phone to their Seiko rep and the outcome was they/no-one could get me one in the UK from an official dealer!
Edit- I put Omega when i meant to put seioko. Omega are truly a bunch of uselss cretins.
I completely stripped and serviced/rebuilt my Seiko Flightmaster a couple of weeks ago. It's been through hell and battered/beaten to hell and back and apart form worn/faded areas on the bezel it's as good as new again

I would love to join in...
But Im not an expert.
I am however surprised on how many experts there are here.
Luke has traded over 100 thousand pounds worth of watches, I had no idea.
Do you work in the Elizabeth Duke consession of a large Argos outlet ?
Later Yoza the small fish.

I've just ordered an IWC UTC Edition Antoine de Saint Exupery limited edition watch, with a leather strap. I don't expect to wear this daily but it's nice to have a snappy dress watch for nights out!

I looked at those, very nice, but wanted the IWC.... I was very tempted with a PP Moon Phase Power Reserve in 18K Rose Gold though. trouble is that there are sooo many nice watches out there!

Casio G Shock - more accurate and reliable, a fraction of the price and bombproof.
If someone INSISTED on buying me a flash watch, I'd get a Patek or a Seiko.
Then I'd sell it.

I've promised myself another one next year. Either a SuperOcean, or a Chrono SuperOcean.
Looked at Rolex watches as well, but they all look very much alike. Not keen on Tag's.
I would say your prices are a little high though. I take it you're looking at the steel braclet rather than leather?
Mine was up for sale at £2975 (new), but paid just under £2500 with a discount.
You shouldn't accept anything less than 15-20% off at the moment.
I'd even try for 25-30%.
