Default Possible good news on ID Cards

Seems a couple of guys have won at the ECHR to have their DNA removed from the police database when they weren't actually found guilty of anything.

DNA database innocents win landmark European court ruling - Telegraph

Not sure if that will affect the holding of DNA / Biometrics planned for the ID cards, but it could make things interesting.

Doh!

Jaquie Spliff has already said the government will ignore it, at least for the time being, (perhaps until the furore dies down, then forever), so what difference will it make?

Sometimes I think the only way we'll stop these cretins is civil unrest on a scale greater than the poll tax riots

If they simply ignore it won't they be held liable for anyone taking court action against them?

Sadly, its the only language they understand but they take chunks of liberty little by little and it mostly goes undisputed. If you could turn the clocks back 10 years and then make a list of all the things that have been introduced since it would be one scary list.

Absolutely. Hundreds, probably THOUSANDS by now, of new crimes added to the statute books

Ah, yes, that famous terrorist, Ghandi.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Civil disobedience has a place, how about the civil rights marches in America, the Suffragette movement?

Im suggesting that anti-terror powers will be used against people making public protests: something that Big Brother has already hinted at (rather than suggesting myself that protesters are, in fact, terrorists)...

Thanks , oh and I agree, I believe some of your councils have used anti-terror powers to catch benefit cheats. Sledgehammer and nuts comes to mind.

The latest I read today was a council (Cambridge IIRC) using anti terror legislation to target paperboys to make sure they had registered with the local council. WTF they have to do so in the first place is beyond me

This country is rapidy becomming a joke with these laws, plus health and safety and anti discrimination laws.

Doh!
The government have said they have not decided to change legislation on this ruling so it's still business as usual, if you are arrested they will be taking your prints and DNA

To quote the article above

The profiles of the two men are now expected to be taken off the database but the Home Office said the current policies of taking and retaining the DNA of innocent people will remain until it delivers it's formal response to the European court in March.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "DNA and fingerprinting is vital to the fight against crime, providing the police with more than 3,500 matches a month, and I am disappointed by the European Court of Human Rights' decision.
"The Government mounted a robust defence before the Court and I strongly believe DNA and fingerprints play an invaluable role in fighting crime and bringing people to justice.
"The existing law will remain in place while we carefully consider the judgement."

The Gov and civil servents should lead by example and have their own details on the system and carry their biometric ID cards. Though I have a feeling that day will never come......

They wont be happy until they have got the situation where they can say that general elections are no longer "appropriate" and that they are quite happy to make the sacrifice to continue to lead us!
