Default Watch Experts: cheap and cheerful "daily driver"

My 5 year old £100 Rotary is looking pretty scruffy now so MrsREV has said she'll buy me a watch for Christmas. I know most of the time we're dealing with £1000s rather than £100s but I just want something for up to £200 that tells the time and looks nice.

Style-wise I hate big, blingy watches and want something subtle, stylish and clean looking. My ideal watch (money no object) would probably be a TAG Monaco.

Any suggestions (other than "increase your budget and buy a Rolex")?

Some good suggestions so far. The Citizen and the Hamiltons look quite good.

I found this:

Tissot Quadrato Chronograph T005.517.17.277.00

Are Tissot watches any good? (I always thought they were)

That Tissot is nice although the black rubber strap would put me off, not personally my cup of tea.

I love the fact that my Citizen is all Titanium not steel. And with ECO drive it never needs battery.

The problem is, they come with either the black rubber strap or the blingy metal bracelet. I prefer the rubber strap to the metal one.

Probably an absolute toilet of a watch for people that know about watches, but I have had this one for about 2months now, it tells the time, is waterproof and will never need a battery change, it also looks ok..

Buy Citizen Gents Eco-drive Black Ion Chronograph Watch. at Argos.co.uk

I looked long and hard for this, without a stainless steel strap.

Its mechanical wind, so no battery.

Well made, un common, and quality.

Russian chronograph "Poljot" Black dial. Aviator series on eBay, also, Wristwatches, Watches, Jewellery Watches (end time 22-Dec-08 16:51:14 GMT)

I also have a Chase Durer Abyss Professional here now, worn twice, as new, for £150 above your limit, but because I know you if your interested ill do easy terms.

Ooh, the Poljot's made the shortlist too. The Chase-Durer looks a bit spangly.

I knew he'd say Poljot (or Sekonda, depending how you look at them). Id suggest a Seiko SKX 007 or 009 big dive. Get an oyster bracelet over a jubilee and youre laughing. Going right up to budget, you should be able to get a black finished Black Monster.....

Just to go back over old ground......

Sekonda is a British distributor of inexpensive fashion wristwatches. Sekonda is the best-selling watch brand in the United Kingdom.

Originally a company which marketed Soviet-made times pieces in the West, Sekonda's Soviet ties ended with the break-up of the USSR. Most Soviet-era Sekondas were re-badged Poljot models produced by the First Moscow Watch Factory.

Since 1993, the company has imported its products from factories in Asia, as it "NO LONGER" has ties with the First Moscow Watch Factory.

Rev, I can show you a number of Aviator models if you want to handle one before buying.

Yes, how they get away with it I dont know. The looks-like-a-Rolex-Oyster bracelet is better loooking, more comfortable and it still has an extension. The looks-like-a-Rolex-Jubilee bracelet doesnt and its not as smart looking on the watch.

I have an automatic '5' for work, that is branded Oyster by Seiko too...

Casio Waveceptor WVQ-560. Synchronises to Rugby or European radio time signal, never have to set it, stainless, water resistant, scratch resistant, yes it's a stainless bracelet, but not to blingy. Think they do some with leather strap.

So: your point is that Sekonda, the First Moscow Watch Factory and Poljot are all very closely linked, yes? I said that. Poljot have quality issues, the better watches arent that well priced and supply is an issue too. Dont get me wrong, there are a couple I wouldnt mind, but Seiko are far better.

If you want an automatic (a proper watch) while being exclusive then I'd get one of these:

Aviator Watches

(although I think the 1936 they are making is almost used up. I've got one of these with a Jurgens strap and it is just perfect)

For quartz:

C7 Rapide Mens Chronograph Watch with Black Face

All here:

Christopher Ward Watches | Swiss movement mens and womens watches

(no connection with the company apart from having several of their watches and being a fan of their low-cost business model !)

I keep hearing good reports about Christopher Ward Watches, but I have not met one in person.

Seiko gets my vote, a nice simple one.

I've got the SUBMARINER DIVER with blue & red bezel which has lasted 5 years of hard daily wear and I've never had any problems.

Casio G Shock Cockpit range.
Bombproof and nice enough to wear out.

I have this one (and another fully digi one) that is doing very well.

In price range too.

Cheers for all the suggestions guys. Me and MrsREV went through them all last night and we both picked the Tissot Quadrato as our favourite. I now have to wait and see if Father Christmas brings me one or not.

I'm going to find a nice leather strap for it. I was thinking of this one:

Di-Modell Chronissimo Waterproof Leather Watchstraps and Watch Strap Accessories from Watchworx TSS UK

Any comments?

I have a Casio Waveceptor - it's properly waterproof, sets itself (including Daylight Saving), has a couple of alarms, looks nice enough in Titanium and is solar powered.

What more could a chap want in a watch?
