Is there a way of finding history on a vehicle you own ?
I own a 1964 Land Rover, and looking through the 'older style' V5 (DVLA hven't bothered sending the new style) I note I have a 9999cc engine fitted with no engine number stated, also, being a 1964, it states there have been 6 owners since August 1977.
Does anyone know if there is a way of finding more history out on a vehicle?

If you txt the Reg to 83600 it will tell you the amount of owners, if its been written off and if its been stolen.
it does cost £3 I think (there or there abouts). I do with every car I buy, aswel as an HPI

yes -- for a small fee you can write to the dvla and they will give you all the information they have on the vehicle -- do a search on the website
or details of the address are contained in the booklet they send you when they send VED reminders
they will send you copies of all past registration documents etc -- i,ve done it few times -- the DVLA put all the records on computer sometime in the late seventies
so records before that can be sketchy - pot luck really
pre centralised, the records were kept by the local council

Nothing off the original log book is saved though. Every car started afresh when the DVLA started to record keepers centrally. Hence the mention of the vehciles original log book: its the only place that youll find the vehicles previous owner details.

Heres a tip on how to get a decent amount of history on a car...
Bury it in a field somewhere, scatter some broken pottery around it, then call in Time Team to dig it up.
Don't make the mistake of dropping any teeth or bones around it though, otherwise they'll tell you it's a roman burial.

when I did a history check with the DVLA for my 970 Cooper S (admitedly in the early 90's)
I got photostats of some of the old green paper logboolks
but as i said when records were centralised it was a bit hit and miss
also lots of information was incorrectly entered i.e. Chassis/Engine no,s
plus pre 1980 is was easy to tell the DVLA anyhing re the car and they would enter it on the log book -- so buying a "classic" car is fraught coz you can't rely on the "logbook"
