Unhappy Woolworths has gone bust

BBC NEWS | Business | Woolworths enters administration

Quite sad really as I used to love Woolworths as a kid.

MFI have gone under as well, but that's not such a great loss! (unless you work for them obviously!) I did a summer job at a place which made the tacky furniture for MFI, so I expect they'll do under as well now.

My Mum and sister, who both manage woolworths stores, were both told on Monday that they'd be unlikely to have their job at Christmas.

MFI went start of last month (owing my employers a bit of cash). Business was part of a management buy-out so that new venture was clearly unsuccessful.

End of next month is meant to be the D day for a number of high profile retailers due to rent commitments etc and I'm bracing myself for more losses with the companies we are still dealing with (although trying to limit the exposure wherever possible)

The fact that our insurers have dropped the insured lines and are refusing coverage on new business speaks volumes. Worrying indeed!

Lots of vacant premises then, just in time for all those nasty little Christmas pound shops.

when i went into MFI about 5/6 weeks ago thee was a letter on the door sayin it had gone into administration.

there were still people buying/ordering kitchens etc from them, i thought WTF ? the shop wont be here in 4 weeks time (its now shut) so unless it was a collection from store,no way id buy an "order" from them. funny i thought.

It is not official yet, but the signs are not good

Feel sorry for all the people who work there, all 30,000 of them and especially any people on here.
Woolworths has always been a stalwart of my youth and I doubt the name Pic'nMix will ever feel the same again

Will they actually close the stores? If they go into administration I thought they can still trade with protection from their creditors until the debt is sorted?

Never had any problems with them myself, and just recently built some of thei Schreiber furniture - and most pleased with it too. Can't fault their instructions either - the list of required tools includes a cup of tea and biscuits

I blame my sister . Worked there for a Saturday job when she was at school. Blind lady and guide dog came in to buy an outfit for her small niece. Little sister sold her the least-well colour matched outfit in the shop. I expect quite a lot of people stopped shopping at Woolies because of that.

And the expansion of food chains such as Tesco's and Sainsbury's. If I want a CD, DVD, computer game or some standard electrical item I think of them first rather than Woolworth's.

Sorry to hear about Woolworths, as many have said, in my youth it was a great place for music, toys, fishing tackle, tools etc.
Not bothered about MFI, the service they provided when we were buying a new kitchen was appalling. Glad I went elsewhere now...

It was the cost of the refit that did it .....
