Default HSE Campaign - Asbestos

I have just received the following via email that might be of interest. HSE has a major campaign on the dangers of asbestos see..

Asbestos - The hidden killer - Campaign.

It might save yours or someone's life one day.

Nasty stuff. Good that they are trying to make people more aware of the dangers of it.

From what I have read, it was still used in many different building materials upto the year 2000 and the advice is just to leave it in place if it is not bothersome, its in your artex on your ceiling, I didn't know that till today

I make sure I get an asbestos report for any site we are going to do work in

Only one site upto now has had asbestos that has been any cause for concern, but ultimately it didnt stop us doing the work, just delayed it slightly

Russia, China and India still use the stuff like its going out of fashion and have no intention of signing up to the treaty about not using the stuff.

Dodgy stuff, we get so many courses on the stuff at work. And its surprising what it is in as well.

This is very good to make people currently working in trades relating to work involving building fabrics. However, not so good for people who has done so previously, who no longer do so.

I probably worked on buildings with asbestos whilst fitting and overseeing works relating to a/c and AHUs. However, having been given zero training in identifying it. Barring the obvious insulating panels/cladding, how am I supposed to know? Whilst exposure was probably not excessive (not much work was done to the fabric of the building barring drilling holes), the unknown factor is great.

One thing the website doesn't say is how long it takes for symptoms to manifest, and also does not quantify how much exposure one needs to make it a real issue. Once in a lifetime? Or every odd day for 10 years?

I mean, whats the time scale here? Will something I worked on five years ago creep up on me in another five years time?

Now I know if I keel over and die from lung cancer, it would point to asbestos inhalation (or the multitude of asthma drugs and steroids I've taken over the years ). So, is that it? Damage is done? How long do I have to wait before knowing for sure that I'm ok?

Scary!
