Default Half four and its dark - why mess with the time?

I was changing the car's pads & oil and by the time I was finishing up I had to get a bedroom lamp on the drive to see what I was doing and it was only half four!!

It really annoys me as I think it is such a stupid thing to do by now - turn the clocks back. It used to serve a purpose I believe - miners used to see some sunlight at one end of their shift due to it. Thatcher sorted that out years ago and we no longer have a significant mining industry so why still do it?

I don't need sunlight at 0630am as the b kids think its time to get up - but it would be nice at 1730, cycling home! I even fell off the cycle last week commuting and that wouldn't have happened in daylight as I'd have seen the ridge. (A kindly gentlemen swiftly offered me a sip of Carlsberg Export as medical help - but I digress)

Aren't there all kinds of stats for increased road accidents when its darker???

Rant off (till the next one )

D

In december it's still dark at 08:00. It's sh*t enough starting work in the dark and being freezing cold, without having to do it for an hour plus extra, which would be the case if the clocks were left at summer time.

The UK moved to CET during WWII, but moved back afterwards as it's supposed to be safer for the kids going to school, and to make life better for farmers, apparently. Though as most kids go to school in people carriers and I've never seen a cow wearing a watch I don't get it. They had a referendum recently in Jersey to see if they would change to CET, but it was about 75% against. Our government are still looking at it. I don't see the problem other than the tv times will be an hour out I mean, as soon as you go to Europe on holibobs, the thing you notice is the light evenings, especially in the summer. Please don't use the "It won't work in Scotland it's too far north" argument, Scandinavia mange just fine, how far north is Tromso!

The farmer reason doesn't stack up really, there are so many hours of light - the farmer could chose which hours he/she works to suit themselves.

I wonder how much of it is some "patriotic" view that we invented GMT so we should use it.

It's never gonna happen with this Scottish-led government.
As soon as anyone mentions it, the scots start whining, too dark in the m.orning etc

Meanwhile, we are out of sync with Europe, missing two hours of banking and commerce daily.

FFS, why not let the Jocks have whatever time THEY want and let England go onto CET? They manage time-zones elsewhere, why should England suffer 'cos the Scots whine?

Oh sorry........forgot to look at my first sentence

I was under the impression that a main argument for leaving the clocks forward was less children's deaths; the opposite of your theory.

It means I can get out my hottle wottle bottle and my 'big slipper' and my duvet type hooded thingy that you see advertised in supplements for wearing whilst I'm in my Parker Knoll recliner armchair, with my lap tray that has a padded underneath bit for my TV dinners supplied by Meals on Wheels.

You know that Europe put their clocks back as well, so they(Western Europe) are only one hour out at any time, right?

Edited to say - With the exception of Portugal who use the same timezone as the UK.

Perma-BST gets my vote too. Changing clocks is a PITA if, like me, you're a bit of a clock freak. I have a massive one on my lounge wall and it's like dicing with death to remove it, change the time, then put it back again

Then there is the moment of panic just before you let go when you think "is that actually hanging on the screw or is it about to come crashing down...?"

That'll be the mad ones then I take it

What's wrong with this quaint island, no VAT, no unemployment, house prices still going up in double digit percentages, no Nu Labour, no revenue cameras.

We should have British Summer Time in winter and change to "double summertime" between March and October, so +2nrs GMT.

This was actually tested between 1968 and 1971 and the figures said that were less deaths and serious injuries by a fair amount each year. MPs still voted against a permanent change.

Like John Culshaw, I believe you are under the wrong impression....

Hence my statement about anyone who moans about the clocks going back being evil and wishing bad to our little ones.

Changing the clock both ways screws my "body-clock" up for a week or so...

Now kids finish school at 2:45 PM, it's a waste of daylight....

Hey, dont Tar us all with the same brush I have always said we should stick to summertime, i would prefer the dark mornings and lighter evenings. You would probably be surprised just how many of us Scots feel the same

The reduction in KSIs could have been something to do with the fact that children wore reflective clothing (diddy jackets) and there was loads of publicity about road safety. Luckily the decision makers understood the impact of changing two things at once and realised that being dark until nearly lunchtime was pretty depressing so kept the status quo!
