Default Involved in a crash and the driver drove off!.

Bit of a pain. I was driving back from cardiff about 5pm last night heading back to bristol when by the brynmar tunnels the traffic slowed due to an accident.
Everyone had to brake hard and stop. After being stopped for about 10 seconds a 1 series bmw hit me up the **** end about 15mph. Thankfully not as bad damage wise as i thought. Both of us went to pull over to the hard shoulder but after sat there for a few minutes he never turned up despite it not being a problem to get over to the hard shoulder.

I have reported it to the police but sadly i had everything but the reg plate so not sure what they can do unless it can be shown on cctv.

Anybody know how i stand on insurance with this?.

If no luck with the police or the insurance i am going to get it done myself.

What a tool though to drive off, makes me think they had no insurance.

Anyway nice to get it off my chest.

By the way i am accepting charitable donations

That sucks, fella. Sorry to hear of this.

How, in the slow moving traffic, did he get away?
There is no way that someone who has hit my car is gonna escape!!
Did ya close your eye's or sommat when you went to pull over and sit there for a few mins? (I'm just messin' with ya there, but I am really at a loss as to how he/she got away without you even getting the reg?)

Hope the damage is an easy fix, sounds like you'll be taking the hit on this with your insurance/excess/doing it yourself.

Probably has insurane being a fairly new car, but probably hasn't got protected no claims. Claim would put up his premium.

If it was slow moving traffic, could you not have crawled along the hard shoulder to get his Reg No.? I would have.

Had the same thing, luckily I got his insurance details and I reported it to the police, just waiting for my insurance company to sort it out now, wasn't much damage but don't see why I should pay for it

someone ran into the back of me last year and I made damn sure I didnt move until I had his insurance.

You dont think he's though the same and that you where just driving off? Did you actually get out and speak to him/her/it?

After having dealt with the insurance companies twice in one year I now carry a disposable camera in the car along with a notepad and pen.

Happened to me in Cardiff - van hits the Evo at lights. Take a pic and remember his reg, then go to move somewhere safer. He didnt follow....

As there was no real damage (the bumper popped back out) I just couldn't be bothered with the hours of my life, letters and hassle it would take to teach him a lesson and then get an unfair 'involved in an accident' note on my insurance.

Hope you nail this one though mate. D

You can claim from the insurance (if you have comprehensive) but you'll have to pay the excess unless they find him and get the money from his insurance.
If you only have third party insurance you can claim from the "Motor Insurers' Bureau".

Only if you have identified the other party. If they hit you and then did one then you cant claim from the fund.....

Not good Dave

The tunnel would almost certainly have CCTV, but not sure how easy it would be to get the footage.

Agree with above that they probably had insurance as 1-series as fairly new models (think 2004 is the oldest) - expect they just couldn't be arsed to pull over.

Guessing this was in the older Renault Clio? If so bumper from a scrappy should be easy to find and fit, but might be a bit more expensive to repair if it was your missus's newer one.

Would defo make a point of doing whatever you can to track down the driver who drove off tho - they should be paying up for this

MIB only pay out on injury claims, they won't pay out on 3rd party vehicle's.

sorry for the late reply been out getting a few quotes today. looks likes its going to cost about £500!.
Not sure how he managed to get away but we both were heading for the hard shoulder and i was the only one who turned up. Have basically every detail other than the reg plate which obviously is the key one.
The traffic did start crawling again just after the incident so i can only persume he hid in the traffic and carried on.

Waiting to see if the police can get anything on cctv but not holding out any hope.

Last thing i need in therun up to christmas!.

Keep you all posted.

Sorry to hear that it's not just gonna buff out. Especially as it's coming up to xmas, I'd be livid, which I'm sure you are
Hope the CCTV comes up with something, good luck!

All the best,

Tom

15mph is fast enough to pop the airbags in a scooby, ridiculously low limit IMHO especially as it costs £000's to replace the kit
