Passport application question
This is for a new passport application not a renewal
If a marriage certificate surname has been spelt incorrectly on one part of the certificate will this cause problems with the passport application?

probably. a passport is a legal document, there should therefore be no tolerance for "mistakes" when it is possible to rectify them. I would suggest you make an appointment with a local registrar and get a duplicate certifcate, but with the necessary amendment. while you;re there, i would suggest you also get hold of another 2 or 3 duplicates just in case - don't keep them all together though!
