Default Mechanical / Robotics question

I am planning to make some moving targets for my rifle range. I need to create a smooth 6 - 8 inch stroke to move the targets inbetween shields. I was thinking of a windscreen wiper motor but the stroke is not enough. I don't mind using electricity or air. Does anyone have any suggestions. I have tried google with little success.

Cheers, Rich.

I did think of going down that route but I have already started building the chassis. Thanks for the suggestion though.

what about a simple motor attached with 3 blade things (think windmill) then just attach the targets to the blades and you have a rotating target? You can set it up so it rotates in stages behind other objects

Didn't think about the rotating target, perhaps I'll use that on the next one! I'm liking the idea of a rack and pinion, simple to assemble and could be very robust.
Cheers
