Just eye'ing up a VW Polo for sale, fully MOT and TAX for £800. I'll get him down to £700 no probs, I know its a little more than £500 but the extra is for the tax and MOT as you dont normally get a fully taxed car around that price.

I got a 471 pound saab 9000 turbo (2.3 litre) and use that as a work hack.
It's brilliant for the money and returns a respectable 31mpg (calculated via odometer + tank fills). Cheap tax, cheap insurance and brilliantly comfortable. Also, they look super cool and if you buy one, the opposite sex will want to reproduce with you.

I'm sure if you could find one that hadn't rusted away, and you don't mind being seen driving one, then the Maestro 1.3 would make a real cheap runaround.
If you want more power, how about an MG Maestro 2.0 Turbo?

i know that nobody will agree with me but...
citroen xsara. everyone hates them but that just makes them really cheap bargains. i owned one in the past (when i couldn't afford to insure a scoob). Did 50,000 miles in mine without a single breakdown. absolutely nothing went wrong.
I'm almost considering buying one again just for when i need to park in dubious places and can't risk leaving the scoob there

Escorts, shudder, I sold one for profit a few years back to one of my mums mates, she drove the revolting contraption for five solid years, it never let her down. The Rover 214 for the same money was in a different league.
