Sounds like its tripping the overheat switch inside the compressor.
A few things can cause this, mainly overheating caused by:
Lack of ventilation (especially if built-in, if so, check if it has a condenser fan, and make sure its working).
High system pressure, either from a blockage (need a repairman or a new fridge) or if it has a internal fan (like most frost free freezers), make sure its working. Or the evaporator is caked in ice.
Both these can make the compressor overheat. Unplug it for a few hours so that compressor is stone cold, then see how long it will run before cutting out again. At the same time check operation of any fans it may have fitted and remove any excess ice build up.
Final issue could be the thermal switch is inside the compressor, but if the thermal switch is duff, it needs new compressor (or new fridge) as its a sealed unit.
