The Guardian - why does that not suprise me.

A left wing, pc correct paper for tree swinging lesbians filled with nonsense public sector jobs for people who would have no chance of keeping a job in the real world - and paid for by us.

A joke.

Ok rant over!

Which bit of the report would you all disagree with, then?

It urges people to return to habits their mothers or grandmothers would have been familiar with: buying locally in-season products, cooking in bulk and in pots with lids or pressure cookers, avoiding waste and walking to the shops - alongside more modern tips such as using the microwave and internet shopping.

Sounds fairly sensible to me.

Thats ok but in this day and age people want convinience and value for money which sometimes you dont get in a local shop.

fine in principle, if you have local shops and the time to walk to them

Have we not moved on from the values of Edwardian England? The only way to revive local shops, selling local products, for local walking people (said in a League of Gentlemen stylee) would be to outlaw supermarkets.

Quite possbibly, but then those same people moan about 17 Tesco express stores popping up in a 3 mile radius - They can't have it both ways.

I try to support my local butcher and grocers, partly because I don't want to be part of the drive to put them out of business, but mainly because the quality of food is approx. 5,275 times better than you get in the supermarket.

Well it's not the *only* way, the other option would be people to use local shops more, and supermarkets less.

I.e. buy your meat at a Butchers (your taste buds will thank you) and buy your frozen veg and what have you at the supermarket.

So Pete,

You advocate her idea that we should change our diet so that the developing world can increase their populations thus supporting a global population in excess of 9bn?

Let's be honest, that's neither clever nor sustainable.

Sorry my point was that the supermarkets would always find a way to crush local opposition one way or the other simply by their nature.

Damn right and the price ,imo, the cost is either the same or maybe slightly more expensive (talking pennies) but most impotantly doesn't taste nasty.
