How to clean racing gloves / racewear?
How do you people clean your gloves without them shrinking and becoming hard and dry?
Just bought a nice pair of FET gloves in blue, and obviously, all the contact points are white, so they got dirty pretty quickly after one session of karting lol
Do you dry clean? Also nomex racing suits? dry cleaning or normal wash?

Dont dry clean your racing suit! I did mine (as it says on the label) and it washed all the flame retardant stuff out of it to the point that it melted the elbow when i touched in on the exhaust accidentally (TKM). Think the best bet is to not buy white race wear.......
I used to hand wash my gloves e.t.c and let them go hard, they'll soon soften up next time is starts pi55ing down on the rolling lap.
Andy.

I wash my race suit on a cool wash 45 tops and then hang it to dry in the front room..... After it has dried i put my suit on and do a full range of movement ie touch toes, full arm circles just to stretch the piping back to what it was, after that its fine. On the other hand i know that people will only dry clean them.... I suspect doing the same as i do with my suit, your gloves will be just fine.
Hope this helps

Actually dry cleaning is best as stated above.

dry cleaning is what they say to do, and many moons ago when i started i did it religiously but really its OTT, just bung it in the wash tho you will loose a bit of the finish on the suit.
The suit you melted, if its a karting suit its not fireproof anyway, but yeah you get your elbow on a TKM then they melt, i've done exactly the same thing!

*nods* You can only wash the 'protection' out of Proban. Nomex is a trade name for an aramid fibre, which is fireproof (you can make it flammable by getting it oily etc, but thats all): Proban is a treated cotton and when its washed too much the protection is lost. Even then it wont melt though: perhaps you had a karting suit?

I had my race suit dry cleaned after every rally - no issues ever and no signs of damage to the material either.
(didn't dare to put it in the washing machine...)

Thanks for all the replies guys
I guess I shall be taking it to the dry cleaner, although the look on the shop owners face might be a bit puzzled..... I live in a tiny village here in Japan, where everyone knows me (or of me)
Ok, what about the suede gloves? Also dry clean? or not bother, seeing as the white contact points are just going to get dirty again lol

Id leave the gloves. If you have a suede wheel too then they should last a long time, as youll be going out of you way to keep both clean (and not touch the wheel without wearing gloves).
