Default Sharia Courts?

I didn't hear that these were made legal?

Yup, they are used for civil disputes where both parties want to settle by sharia law. If there is any quesiton of breaking British law, then the case is handled by the British legal system.

Unfortunatly, los of people will read this as muslims living under their own law, (and looking at the comment page of the times, some ***** have already taken that line) which is not the case. This is for CIVIL disputes.

In the six cases of domestic violence, Siddiqi said the judges ordered the husbands to take anger management classes and mentoring from community elders. There was no further punishment.

In each case, the women subsequently withdrew the complaints they had lodged with the police and the police stopped their investigations.
So, you can beat your wife, then ask for it to be dealt with by what is basically a foreign court and the mater will then be dropped by the Police?

All I can say is, my f*cking dinner better be nice tonight!

(All joking aside, what the hell is going on????)

Of course if Criminal law is affected then the case should be dealt with under the British legal system. I would be interested to see the details behind the domestic violence cases - The article gives the impression that is was a case of "wife beating" (a Murdoch paper, knocking Islam, never ), perhaps it was, perhaps it wasn't but the police evidently decided there was not a criminal case to answer, otherwise the man would have been tried under the criminal justice system just like anyone else.

Could be seen as dipping their toes in the water...

there's no place for it IMO. We all live by the same laws and that should be the end of it.

Jewish courts have been in this country for a few centuries. But of course we knew that already, on account of there being a thread a week on here moaning about them
