Basically I was intrigued as to why my sister would need a freeview box for her HD ready TV. As my understanding of it was that HD came after digital thus the TV must be digital, and that after ITV went bust they just renamed DTV, freeview.

Ah now I understand, I still think most HD ready TV's do not have freeview built in ours doesn't and I specifically wanted it that way.
As said not all freeview boxes are the same and what is the point of having it built in if you have Sky, BT vision, Virgin etc paying for something you don't need.

By discarding with the TV tuners and audio equipment you can either buy a panel much cheaper, or get a higher spec model for similar money. Many people in the AV community do this as they already have a Sky+ box and maybe a Freeview box possibly with HDD and/or DVD recording capabilities, and usually a 5/7.1 or more audio set-up and related amps, processors and speakers so why pay for something you already have ? To many TV watching is unimportant as they mostly watch movies which they'll use Bluray, HDDVD, DVD or downloads for anyway, and they might have their home cinema in a different room to where they watch TV as a family. Lots of reasons for buying a panel without tuners !

I don't really keep tabs on what other people buy, but in my own application I opted for a TV (ie with tuner) rather than a display (no tuner) as I am wanting to reduce my monthly outgoings, getting rid of Virgin TV and relying on Freeview. I have a Freeview HDD/DVD recorder allowing me to record and watch different programs, but if I also had Sky then there wouldn't be as much need for a tuner in the TV. I may add Freesat later to get free HD content, and again I will opt for a HDD recording box, at which point I would have enough versatility to not bother with a TV tuner, but as it's there I won't be replacing it anytime soon.
