do you goto the police in a case of defamation or is it an entirely public thing?

I believe it is civil law and not criminal law, therefore no police.

the lawyer bit isnt actually an issue, but I wanted to check before I jumped in with both feet, a quick google really didnt help and I know there are some very clever people on here, so wanted to cover all bases.

Unless it breaks a law such as racism or inciting violence etc then it is a civil wrong / tort.
