You hand out the programmes and seat people in smoking or non smoking...it's pretty easy, I've done it twice, far better than being Best Man cos you don't have to do a speech

My ushers had two jobs:
1. Greet the guests on arrival at Church, hand out the service sheets etc etc
2. Ensure the the groom (i.e. me) had a beer in my hand during the inordiantly long and boring photos. They took shifts for this one because it turned out to be quite hard work

When it gets busy get a few mates to go past you and tell them to slip you a fiver as a tip and make sure others see this happening. 100 guests and you've got yourself a drink out of it dl

I'm glad somebody highlighted the main point of being an usher!
It's your duty to crack on to all the single birds at the wedding. I was one recently. Great excuse to enjoy all the best bits of the wedding and not have the stress of being best man.

I got married 3 weeks and one day ago
I had 1 chief usher and 3 ushers. Chief usher basically chose which of the following jobs he wanted to do and the rest were done by the usher of his choice.
1/ Handing out Orders of Service
2/ Making sure that guests know where to sit
3/ Making sure guests know where to park at the church and how to get to the reception (although directions are in with the invitations) - some people are thick.
4/ Paying (with the grooms money) any limo drivers / wedding singers etc...
5/ Makingn sure people know where to go at the reception venue.
6/ Making sure they round up the guests when it is time to dine
7/ Helping the photographer round up the guests when he calls them up for photos.
8/ Getting drunk with the groom
You get the idea
My ushers did a bit more than the above but the above is pretty standard stuff if you have an average sized wedding at a church and seperate reception venue
I had mine removing our flowers from the church at the annoyance of the churchy people, paying supplementary limo drivers (with my money), helping with lots of the logistics - fetching, carrying etc... My chief usher was an absolute legend and did a hell of a lot more on the day and build up than the best men...
It is a challenging role if done properly. One wedding I went to recently had two ushers who didnt do anything and it showed. No-one knew where to sit, when it was time to dine etc and it disjointed the whole day...
Good luck

When I was the best man, after I had downed copious bottles of wine, beers and spirits, I (still bloody sober!) had to deliver the speech.
When I had finished, the ushers ("mates") all held up cards with scores on them.
Then I sat down, the adrenalin left me... and I was instantly pissed
