Does no road tax affect my insurance?
I am having V5/Private reg issue with the previous owner of my car. I still have a plate that he wants back, he has the V5 and is pissing about sorting out the number plate removal.
I have car insured, but not taxed, I am happy to risk a fine if caught and the cops don't believe my story, but if I crash, will my insurance be invalidated by the lack of road tax?
Once the private plate is sorted then I will back date the tax anyway.

As long as you have a certificate, third party risks are covered no matter what.
In the event of your insurers getting pissy, they may well void your own comprehensive cover, and may take steps to recover what they pay to third parties from you.
Whether they do this or not depends on the insurers and what the policy states about the cars required condition etc.

Forgot to say, the fine if caught driving it is a minor risk compared to having the car impounded if its seen parked without tax, as many forces do now. I am happy to drive without tax for the few days it takes my paperwork to come through after buying a car (MOT and insured though) but wont park it anywhere in town.

Thanks for all the feedback.
I decided to get it straight from the horses mouth, phoned the insurance company and explained the situation. I am covered fully comp, even without road tax. I have asked them to confirm this in writing just to be sure.
I have also applied for a new V5 from DVLA, so if my request gets processed first then the registration plate is mine , and I will keep it due to the amount of pissing about the previous owner and dealer have put me through to get to this point. It's not the best plate in the world R60 HDT (RED HOT apparently!) but does suit the car nicely
