Olympics question
I've always thought that the olympics are for amateur athletes and as soon as they turn professional they can't compete.
For instance in Boxing, Audrey Harrison and the skinny lightweight one both turned pro after the olympics had finished.
Has this changed? if not how on earth is/was Andy Murray, Nadal etc competing as surely they are classed as pro's
I would subscribe to this thread but it seems a bit pointless as it still doesn't work

you wrote "In the football all the squad must be under 23" to which you added "but you can have 3 over age players"
The second part of your statement turns the first part into a complete untruth.
Now if you had put
"In the football most of the squad must be under 23 but 3 players can be above that age."
I would have understood it and would not have questioned the poorly constructed wording.

At the time of the 2006 World Cup, Murray said he would be supporting "anyone but England", and would be wearing a Paraguay shirt - England's opponents - during our opening game.

Amateurism rules ended way before the Los Angeles Olympics (though can't remember exactly when) as it was causing all sorts of problems. I remember when loads of skiers boycotted the games as their instructors were not allowed to compete because they were paid for their instruction and therefore were deemed to be 'professional'.
Now, it's down to the governing bodies of the sports themselves to decide whether or not professionals are permitted to participate. There are currently only two sports at the olympics where professionals are not permitted to participate - baseball and boxing. I know in Boxing, the rules about deeming anyone who receives payment for their sport is deemed professional doesn't strictly apply as some boxers receive 'bonus' payments for any success in the olympics.
