I don't think 'tard has quite the same effect over here.

In the UK its far more acceptable to use the word.

Yes, I agree. Not that I hear it much. When I was a child the term was 'Joey'.

Also, who was the first person ever to come up with the universally accepted "face" that translates into "you utter spaz". It's like the London Underground map; Complete genuis.

Blue Peter And Cultural Impact

In 1981, the year of his death, Joey Deacon was featured on the children's magazine show, Blue Peter, for the International Year of the Disabled. He was presented as an example of a man who achieved a lot in spite of his disabilities. However, despite the positive light in which the programme's editor was trying to present his story, the impact was not as intended. The sights and sounds of Joey's distinctive speech and movements had a lasting impact on young viewers, who quickly learnt to imitate them. Joey's name and mannerisms quickly became a label of ridicule in school playgrounds across the country. Even today, if a person trips over or happens to otherwise compromise themselves, they may still be mocked as a "Joey". Nonetheless, many who were children at that time now look back on him rather fondly.
1981 by the looks of it

Didn't Ben Stiller (or one of the other cast) use that term rather extensively in one of his previous Films "There's something about Mary"?

I wasn't really paying much attention to the dialog during that film

Disability isnt funny, but people tying themselves in knots is, the whole Joey Deacon thing, well, making fun of those with Cerebral Palsy isn't a noble pursuit but the whole Deacon phenomenon was part of anyone over about 33's childhood, we remember it fondly, despite its distasteful subject matter.

It is amsuing because the BBC thought that kids would be sensitive and touched, how wrong could they be, they just gave kids a new set of insults to hurl and the opportunity to do deacon impressions, serious business, being the best Deacon, gurning with style, drooling with passion and it drove your mum mad.

So Joey Deacon, in his own was did more for Disabilities than possibly could have been imagined, all those guilty feeling thirty somethings....

We used to use the term "Benny" as in Benny from Crossroads, or "spaz". Said that at work the other day, which caused a rather uncomfortable silence from some of the more PC people, and suppressed laughter from those of my age group.

Good job I didn't do the face

Ever think us thirty somethings saying "Joey" and "Spazzer" are becoming like our parents and grandparents dropping casual "*******" and "Pakis" into the conversation.

J4CKO is looking forward to becoming an embarrassment to his children.

My mum's just moved out of hospital into a home, and whilst visiting her, you'd often hear the other oldies, and my mum come out with such comments as "That darkie nurse is so nice", one 90+ "lady" said to one of the Thai nurses that she much preferred her to another nurse, as "even though you've got slitty eyes, at least your not a nigg%$"

Some of the staff at the home my mum has moved to are from South Africa, prompting my mum to query if that was correct, because they weren't "proper darkies"

Shame I've got no kids to embarrass!

Before my fiances nan died, she was in hospital. She called the black nurses the same thing ..'oooh look at that darkie...' In her defence though, she was suffering from dementia, and back in her day thats was an accepted term for people of black origin

Reminds me of a classic line from Fawlty Towers, from the Major, who was very like my late Grandad. Even back in the 70's this theme of older people being very racist, for the sheer sake of it had been identified, perhaps with an element of having fought against various countries in the war, i.e. if you called someone a name in the heat of war, when they were killing your mates, it would be difficult to give it up just because someone younger, who hadn't lived through that has told you its wrong.

The Major: And the strange thing was... throughout the morning she kept referring to the Indians as *******. "No no no," I said, "the ******* are the West Indians. These people are wogs." "No, no," she said. "All cricketers are *******."
