Ipod - uploading music questions
How easy is it to upload tunes to an ipod?
My birthday pressie to me has arrived and uis waiting patiently at home for me to get back Friday - 80gb ipod classic and an fm transmitter/charger for the car(s)
I have some 8-10gb of tunes on the hd of my computer to load onto it.
I understand that i need to use i-tunes to transfer music.
how long is this likely to take to transfer my 8-10gb of music.

Paul,
There are alternatives to iTunes, but I'd try iTunes first as it's the most simple method of getting the songs onto the iPod.
When you launch iTunes and plug in the iPod it should ask if you want to automatically sync the iPod, you do not want to do this, otherwise it will mirror your iPod to whatever you have in iTunes, so if you put music on your ipod from another computer and it auto-syncs, it will remove that additional music. It's Apple's attempt at piracy prevention.
Another option you'll want to look at is to go into iTunes preferences, then go to the Advanced tab, there will be an option there about copying music to the iTunes folder, you should turn this off for the moment.
Is all your music in one folder, or is it scattered about in different folders? If it's all in one folder, what you could do is whilst you're in the advanced settings, change the iTunes Music folder location to the folder where your music is stored.
Once you get to this point you can use the "Add folder to Library" option to add the existing music to your iTunes Library. As we disabled the option to copy music, it's not going to make duplicates of the files.
Once added, you can attach the iPod and simply drag and drop the music from your Library to the iPod from within iTunes.
As for how long it'll take, not too sure actually, depends on wether you are USB 1.x or USB 2, I think about 50GB of music over Firewire took about an hour to hour and a half, but it's been a while since I had to do that.

Brilliant, thank you Markus, loking forward to getting some tunes back in the car(s).
Cd changer packed up in the Pug and not wired up the changer in the Mazda, so this will be a treat for my (and the families) ears!

In addition to Markus' comments, most of my time getting tunes on to my iPod is spent tidying and standardising tags plus getting good quality artwork. But then I like my tunes to be very uniformly tagged

Dont like itunes with a vengeance, why should we be beholden to some obscure system/front end & format just because the "geeks" think its cool.
FFS you cant delete anything from the dam thing without having to "sync" it first.
Sharepod is what i use, plug & play drag and drop.
i,m fed up of the amount of times an update is available for Itunes and bl**dy quicktime.
