Quick technical question
A chap at work has been told his Seat Ibiza has a leaky CV gator (sp) in the gearbox, which is leaking fluid onto the driveshaft, which is causing a driveshaft knocking noise.
Seeing as how neither of us are remotely mechanical, does this sound like a plausible explanation to anyone?
Cheers,
Paul.

Not really (as described)
CV = constant velocity joint (flexible joints in the driveshafts). CV joints are packed with grease, but not filled with fluid.
Sounds like the rubber gaitor (cover) on one of the CV joints has become torn, and the joint has worn. That will cause knocking within the joint itself.
Does that help?

Cheers DD, he says it is knocking, which is why it's in the garage, it was just that their explanation didn't sound like something that would cause knocking.
I'll let him know.

As above the gaiter is just there to keep the dust/grit and general **** from the coupling. But not sure what is meant by "in the gearbox"?
But replacing the gaiter is not going to stop any knocking. dl

These days you'd "normally" get a replacement driveshaft.
Bog standard, you need a new CV joint but labour to strip and rebuild the driveshaft means it works out similar to a driveshaft replacement. What you might win on the parts cost, you'll lose on the labour.
