Plane "Go Around"

Plane "Go Around"
Have moved offices and now have one that has a good view of the Manchester Flightpath, can see everything on final approach which is quite interesting for a plane geek (not spotter I hasten to add).
Anyway, we heard a plane (Emirates) going past with the engines at a much higher speed than normal, accerating and instead of losing height it was gaining and pointing skyward, it had obviously abandoned the approach and was going around, saw it turn right and a few mintes later come in for a second sucessful approach, a quick look on the Arrivals for Manchester said it was the EK017 arriving from Dubai and that it had arrived at 12:18.
Now I know this happens but it was interesting to see it but was wondering how often it happens and what the possible reasons would be, I am thinkingthere was probably something that hadnt cleared the runway or something.

Runway not being clear, approach vector wrong, downdraft, updraft, call off by ATC... particuarly noxious fart by the first officer causing the pilot to gag...
The best ones are when you JUST touch down and suddenly get the full throttle launch. Alton Towers has nothing like it!

At LHR, it works out to approx 0.25% of all arrivals result in a GA. Out of 240,000 arrivals per year, chance of being on one are slim. LGW has more though, 1 per day IIRC.
Reasons include, aircraft ahead slow to vacate the runway, unstabilsed approach and some others that I can't remember!

Has happened to me once. If ever there's anything to create an uneasy atmosphere on a plane, this is it, especially given it took the pilot at least 5 minutes to explain the reason (sidedraught). Still not as scary as landing at Dublin in a 50mph sidewind having been hit by lightning during the flight.

It has happened to me three times now. Still scares the crap out of me...one minute the plane is sedately drifting towards the runway, ground insight, engine on idle and I'm thinking "nearly there".
Then the engines race up to take off-power, nose quickly pulls up and the plane banks hard. And now I'm thinking "oh sh*t" and putting nail imprints into the armrests.
I don't think its one of those things I'll ever get used to. Despite being reassured by the pilot (after levelling out) that its all normal and routine.

It happens as little as possible, it is an expensive action of course so is not popular with the operating company. If it is due to a poor approach by the flying pilot he would find it grossly embarassing and would never be allowed to forget it!
The most likely reason is a "wave off" by Air Traffic because of a blocked runway or similar for safety reasons. It is always disturbing for the passengers as well of course.
It will also upset all the schedules and arrangements for flights which are arriving at the time.

Best one i've been on was landing in Malta ( i think ) where we nearly touched down, way down the runway, boot full of throttle, straight up again and after 5 min the captain said "errrrrrr sorry folks, didn't quite make it that time, but we'll be trying again in a few minutes" I was about 12 and thought it was great excitement, my parents were not impressed though

1/ Ryanair - Dublin-Manchester, landing in a massive electrical storm with big crosswinds, the pilot aborted twice on final approach before she finally got it on the ground
2/ Nok Air - Bangkok-Phuket, sudden crosswinds and turbulence as he lined it up, this was a week after another plane overran the end of the runway and blew up .
3/ British Airways - Heathrow-Delhi, the plane that landed in front of us apparently broke down before it had cleared the runway

Although it's slightly un-nerving at the time, I have to agree with Kieran, Alton Towers have got nothing to match the feeling of a slowly decending plane suddenly going to full throttle (especially a 747 with most of it's fuel load gone) and lifting it's nose again

I must be really unlucky then, I don't fly that much but I've been on three go-arounds so far, one of which did it twice
2/ Nok Air - Bangkok-Phuket, sudden crosswinds and turbulence as he lined it up, this was a week after another plane overran the end of the runway and blew up .

I would have been on the plane that crashed and blew up were it not for the fact that i thoght all the 1-2-Go aircraft looked dirty, old and knackered (which they are - i didn't even think 100 series 747's were still flying commercially!) so i paid more to fly with air asia on a brand new Airbus instead

Typical causes for a go-around:
Windshear
Wind out of a/c limits,
Heavy rain,
Thunderstorm(s) over the field,
Turkish/Greek/Russian muppets that dont vacate the runway on time......
Runway incursion(s)
Loss of minimun separation between landing aircraft during the actual approach,
The approach is not stabilised,
Loss of visual conditions (ie Runway, also for LVO conditions)
The coffee was not up to par and therefore we have make time so we can have a refill,
Generally it is a combination of these situations, usually on the day you slept less than you should have etc etc................

I was on the Air Asia Bangkok-Phuket flight that was due to land straight after the 1-2-Go flight that blew up. Obviously we went back to Bangkok shortly after taking off and then i was on the 1st plane to land at Phuket the day afterwards

Plus you can't beat flying in a plane that's painted to look like a fecking big duck

Yeah i flew Nok Phuket-Bkk after missing an Air Asia flight one morning and it was fine. Air Asia has the nicest trolley dolleys though
Did you see the lineup of 1-2-Go aircraft at BKK? Like a junkyard you see on telly except they're still flying daily i honestly thought they were old aircaft waiting to be scrapped when i first flew into BKK.

Could of been something on the runway such as birds (of the flying variety) I was on a C17 coming out of Afghanistan that had reports of some Talibany in the mountains surrounding the airfield may have an RPG now that was a take off, it took off stayed low and fast and basiclly went straight up, the G-Force was incredible for a such a massive aircraft, one of our harrier pilots was in the cockpit at the time and told us there were stall warnings going off every-where, it was ace.
