Default One for the road cyclists - whats your top speed?

Been recording my rides (GPS watch) on my Focus Cayo carbon and gradually getting faster, top speed so far is 34.5 mph (not many steep hills round here!) with an average of 23.2, I'm sure I must be able to hit 45 ish down a decent gradient, just need to find one.

33.5mph on a racer seems like 120 in my STI!

Anyone better that on a pushbike?

I have claimed in the past, using electronic means, speeds of up to 49 mph, now this may be pretty inaccurate given the technology but I would claim an honest 40 mph on a racer flat out in top, down the hill from Alderley Edge, quite scary, my uncle lost his back wheel there and spent some time in hospital.

On current cannondale Hybrid, its 17.2 maximum but since fitting the speedo I havent left our road as have been on holiday/jury service and now back at work, no wife and kids around (in Wales) I cant be arsed. Back to it on Monday for some higher speeds.

A friend of mine was telling me that on a recent London to Brighton run he clocked 49.5 on the downhill stretch into Brighton, he was so pee'd off he didn't break the 50 he went back and had another go but still didn't manage it, although he did say it was quite scarey doing that speed on a bike.

All this on a cheap bike as well, I think he enjoyed the fact he was passing lots of poseurs on £5-6K bikes as he put it, he manages about 100 miles a week so is pretty fit, I expect he will break the 50 mph barrier soon as he's going again this weekend.

Have had an indicated 44.6. That was on a mountain bike too - though on tarmac. I was so pleased I took a picture of the dial.

Fell off at 43 going down chainey hill just outside newport.

Fell onto the grass verge though wich was fortunate, what wasn't 3 seconds after falling off, I wrapped my knee round a fence post and spent the next 9 months in physio.

I've hit an indicated 45. There are plenty of hills around my neck of the woods.

I've not attempted to do that again. Have you thought how badly that would hurt if you came off!

I've only managed 24 mph as everytime I get on a decent hill, traffic always pull out in front of me or the lights change.

My average speed is just over 10mph but there are a hell of a lot of hills in Notts. Tomorrow I'm doing a 50 mile round trip, most of which will be up hill to start with, followed by a gentle decline and then a tough up-hill climb to finish.

This is why motorbikes are dangerous. lol

The problem on a mountain/road bike is that you can put so much effort into peddling yourself faster that you start to lose consentration and balance, and as some people have said - thats not a good thing when your doing just below 50!

I once came off a bmx on a farm track that had about a quarter mile downhill straight. reckon I must have been doing near enough 40 when I came off...and it was F*cking agony. Didnt break anything though

Have caught cars going down the cat and fiddle. Cant peddle any more in top gear on my 21 gear mountain bike.

Since getting knocked off a few years ago going down the hibel road in macc I always wear a helmet and doing any sort of speed you need one.

Ingelby incline (1.5 miles of it !) in the North Yorks Moors.... 52 mph on a mountain bike on shale/gravel road.... zero protection, I nearly papped myself thinking about the gravel rash.

DunxC

P.S. used to run a 50 tooth Pace front chain ring, so easily managed 40 mph chasing "roadies" for fun. ( that was a decade ago... cough !)

Fastest I was clocked at was by a following car on a downhill section of a time trial. I ran out of gears (53 x 11) doing 57mph. I was actually passing cars
That was many a year ago though, recently my top speed is about 15mph being the fat lazy b*****d that I am these days!

32mph : Flat road on a mountain bike with off-road knobly tyres.

Sustained on a gym bike : Covered 42km (26 miles) over a 1 hour session.

This is all insignificant when you compare it to Lance Armstrong's Tour de France in 1999 where he averaged 40.276km/h over the whole tour of 3870km

Clocked at 52 down Ashby Road into Burton by the copper that pulled me over and bollocked me

53 x 11 road bike (a mates!) flat out and under-taking all the cars in the 30 zone.

Copper was trying to tell me off but failing as I grinning - he told me it was "nothing to be proud of" I couldn't help but reply "yes it is!!"

Also got pulled over by another policeman while doing 48 down a hill into Stafford (student days). He was more relaxed about it and said he was impressed

We had our club hill climb on the cat last night. Plenty of bikers and cars out, and unusually not a copper in sight

So going at nearly twice the limit, and undertaking cars sticking to the limit is something to be proud of?

You sir, are a tw@ of the highest order!

Your lucky i wasnt in the passenger seat of one of the cars, cos i would have "accidentally" opened my door just before you passed us, and stopped you in your tracks!

I was 17 at the time. I'm now 41 and a bit wiser.

It's a pity you're not less insulting.

The road in question is very wide with plenty of room to undertake, but then of course you would know this being in full possession of all the facts

According to my Specialized electronic speedomentre (calibrated - I had calaclutae the wheel/tyre's circumferance), I got 49mph (was trying to get 50 - head down, arms tucked in ) out my old moutain bike down a VERY steep hill.

**** was that scary, especially when I soon found out that the brakes weren't up to slowing me down for the bend 3/4 the way down. The only time I had a scare bigger than that on two wheels was on my Kwack H1 (widow maker - also matched my scoob for fuel consumption ) when it tank slapped big time on me when pushing it a wee bit too hard (me being a feejit).
