So whats it going to take for the Queen to act?!

I don't think a bribe will do it...

she's the Queen. She doesn't need an excuse to dissolve parliment.

Come on your Majesty, do the decent thing and save us all from this meglomaniac.

The queen demanding that parliament be dissolved would result in two things.

(i)The abolition of the monarchy
(ii)Parliament not being dissolved

Who would do the abolishing, and who do you think the armed forces would support?

Of course this is a purley hypothetical scenario but:

Is so doing the Queen would create an immediate constitutional crisis in which there COULD only be one outcome; the abolishment of the morachy.

Like them or not the government is democratically elected, and the Queen aint, the Monach would be signing her own death sentence (not literally of course)

Very true, but as you well know that's not how it works in this country, we elect a government not a PM, like it or not that's just the way it is.

It used to be the way it worked before this lot got into power.

John Major had the courage to 'put up' More than Bottler Brown from Dithering Heights has the guts to do. The man is a pathetic coward.

Parliament would do it. They would utterly ignore any demands from the Queen - She has no power whatsoever.

As for who the armed forces would support, I am not sure one way or the other. There would be a split I would imagine.

It's all academic anyay because there is more chance of us being invaded by Martians than the Queen attempting to dissolve parliament.

No it didn't. Hence the reason we didn't have a GE in 1990. The only reason we had a GE in '92 was because the 5 years was up.

That's just not true, John Major waited until the very last moment before holding a general election, he was in power significantly longer than Brown has been as an 'unelected PM' - please get your fact right!!

You beat me to it Pete

I wish people would at least attempt to check the facts before posting up, it does make them look a tad dim, especially when the facts utterly floor their own arguements

You might be right about the likelyhood of it happening Pete, but the Queen's right to do it is enshrined in our constitution whether you like it or not.

The armed forces owe their allegiance to the Queen. The oath taken on joining states that.

Les, I'm not sure what you are suggesting here?

Do you mean we'd have some sort of military coup if the Queen forced the abolishment of the monachy by dissolving parliament? If you believe that I think you might have been at the paint thinner

It's not , Les.

The Monarchy Today > Queen and State > Queen and Government > Queen in Parliament

Only the PM can instigate proceedings to dissolve parliment.

Thanks for the link Pete. It says the following part way down:-

In addition to opening Parliament, only The Queen can summon Parliament, and prorogue (discontinue without dissolving it) or dissolve it.
When a Prime Minister wishes to dissolve Parliament and call a general election, he or she is obliged to seek the permission of the Sovereign to do so. For this purpose, the Prime Minister usually travels to Buckingham Palace before announcing a general election.

Looks as though she has a major say in it all according to that.

Just for thought I'd point out... we don't have a Constitution as such... (unlike our colonial cousins over the pond). We have a bunch of Decrees, Charters, Convention, Bills & Parliamentary Acts... pretty much starting with the Magna Carta.

I also think if the Queen tried to dissolve Parliament on her own whim it would lead to her removal and probably the abolishment of the Monarchy.
