Hang on my definition of a chav isn't white working class....

It's a fooking idle laybout, on benefits because he can't be arsed to get a job (not because he can't), causing grief to anyone and everyone whilst loitering somewhere with a bottle of white lightning 'cider'...

That's more along the lines that I was thinking. I wouldn't use it as a blanket term for all white working class (maybe something to do with I am white working class. ). I would think most people using the term chav, mean more than just someone who is working class (or not working as the case may be).

Ive always preferred calling the dirty scrubbers, just that: dirty scrubbers. Im not working class, but I too am certain that charvers are part of an underclass and nothing at all to do with working class people. Tom Hampson is another well-meaning but hopelessly out of touch liberal and the Fabian Society is a left-wing think tank; that says it all really.

No idea where the term "Chav" came from, they were always "Charva's" up here.

The stereotype description applied to members of the white working class is offensive to a group that cannot defend itself, according to Tom Hampson, editorial director of the Fabian Society.

Cannot defend themselves?!?

This never was the reason for the term 'chav' though. What you describe is and has always been plain scum as far as I know. A chav was a somebody with money that could buy style in terms of material goods but could never possess it personally.

That Michael Carrol springs to mind as a prime example.

The word gets misused now to describe anybody that is socially challenged.

We call them NEDs up here which actually means, Non Educated Delinquent, so yes drop the term 'Chav' and call them 'Neds' instead, you know it makes sense

Their idea of style is completely different to mine, but your description and your example are completely right. I have heard chav was an abbreviation where ch was council house, but I can't remember what the av was.

There are lots of 'definitions' made-up by people. Chav come from the Geordie Charver, which oroginally meant a dirty woman...

Beat me too it.

It was on Breakfast news this am. They made a point that if chav is a term for a particular part of society, why are there not calls to ban snob, toff etc.

Love the benefit pic

"deep and revealing level of class hatred", a think tank will say next week.
hang on a sec!! So they are reporting something that the think tank hasn't actually said yet! So just how exactly does the Guardian know a week in advance what the think tank is going to say a week later?????

Kind of takes the whole point of a think tank away doesn't it? as it is obviously scripted in advance so why bother having these think tanks?? or am I missing some point here?

PMSL - spot on mate spot on.

And what a surprise...
The article's from the Guardian - that well known newspaper that often publishes articles for the people that live in their gated communities away from the real world and away from those "nasty working class people."

If I was in power I think I'd start by having all think tanks "emptied" LOL. After all, they either come up with complete cr*p or tell us the ******* obvious anyway...

I don't think the term 'chav' is offensive enough to describe them, even '****ing chav' doesn't somehow do it, maybe it's time we invented a new word?

Spot on, it has nothing to do with where people live - Chav is a state of mind and outlook on life, more to do with spongers, trouble makers, yobs, wasters and pillocks.

Fabian Society showing just how out of touch they really are.

I thought it came from Chatham originally?

Either way, the meaning has been lost as it never referred to just workshy *******s, it could be applied to those with cash as well, the Beckhams, Westbrook etc etc.

I don't think chav is offensive enough for the scum of this country.

Yes, I'd heard that was where it had come from too.

Instead of Chav, how about WAF's? Workshy, Arrogant F**kers
