Courier of large items
I'm struggling to find a courier that will deliver my poker tables.
Anyone know who would take items upto 8ft x 4ft with a value of around £1000?

They look like they are excellent quality - good luck with the business, I'm sure you'll do well once you have figured out a delivery solution. You should try some direct advertising through the british poker blogger scene as well. Follow the link to my now redundant blog (url next to my name) then click on 'Amatay'. Amatay has a list of loads of poker blogs and, conveniently, has a flag next to them to signify the bloggers country. A good number of these guys will have high disposable incomes and a love for poker and all things poker related.

I will check the links you gave, thanks for the heads-up.
I've already provided the final table for the Scottish Poker League just about to start. 50-odd pubs involved, with Vegas holiday and such. You gonna have a go in that?
I did contact a few poker leagues, with not much success. Although The Nuts was originally interested, but that faded. Just doing one for another league in Manchester.
Really need a reliable courier though, can't be driving up and down the country all the time.
Anyone know of any other companies that would ship these?

Thanks!
One of my favourite tables that one:
Walnut Veneered Racetrack, Brass Cups, Custom Sub-dyed cloth on mini-suited speed cloth, Dual peds, vintage faux leather. Blue EL lighting and all the other standard parts like HD foam and closed cell padding for the play surface.

could you rigg up a box so that they can be stood on there end? if so they'll go on a pallet, then there's loads of pallet companies to choose from, palletways, pallet ex, pallet force the list goes on, even if you can't / don't want to stand them up, speak to your local pallet xxxxx franchised agents as most will try to accomodate you in there general haulage side of there bussiness if it can't go through the network. they usually work on zones, with the furthest mainland zones from me (in a pretty central scarborough) costing £88 inc vat, £120 for southern ireland, an starting from £20 for local.

Thanks Stevie.
Yes, i was going to construct the tables, then support with foam and encase them in a purpose-built crate.
A pallet. Right. I've not used anyone or anything like that before, but at least i now know who to contact.
The problem then is that the box 8ft x 4ft becomes quite heavy and awkward to move, but i'm sure they will have blokes to come and pick it up, rather than just a driver.
Do i need to put it actually on a pallet, or would the box be fine?

ok basically you won't find a cheap way to move these without problems they simply are too big for pallet or any overnight carrier. If you get one to take them you'll find the delivery is to the roadside only. The only way is with a same day courier with a transit van means you don't hire the van and save a days driving plus diesel, downside is the cost its likely to be somewhere near £300 plus vat. however trawl yell and look for guys who are self employed and you may get it down towards £200 often without vat. If you can combine deliveries then these should be able to be done on a drop rate so will cut the cost per delivery down. If its an option let me know where you are and I'll see if I've any owner drivers up your way.

Yeah, that's the problem i'm facing. When they hear the weight, size and value i get a "no".
I'm 30 miles south of Glasgee.
I don't mind driving 100-150 miles, but to London is becoming a drag.
I'll check yell.com and these pallet companies and see if anyone can help. I know another table builder, he managed to get deliveries for £100, but i doubt he'll divulge his sources.

try 01698 749777 Its a company called FDV direct based in Paisley and I know they do a trunk service between Glasgow and the South, if you've a few days to get the delivery done they may be able to help. £100 sounds like a bargain but I'd guess their goods flat pack as it sounds too cheap otherwise.

Not used these myself, but did source a 'man with a van' via ebay who traveled from Kent to Manchester to collect a large heavy sofa, then delivered to Sussex.
Worth a try
Man with a Van -Courier service ALL OF UK @ FIXED RATES on eBay, also, National Services, Courier Delivery Services, Local Services (end time 22-Jul-08 14:08:10 BST)

the standard size of a pallet - 1000mm x 1200mm. i've had a quarter pallet rate with a max height of 2 foot, so i'd imagine a max height of 8 foot inc the pallet. max weight of 1000kg's. so its gonna be tight, but if its too big for the pallet network the agent will most likely be able to deliver it, just not through the network, or the network price!
proberly easiest to screw a pallet to your box or incorporate the pallet into it. if you do make your own make sure there's wood across the bottom (like on a pallet) as this stop it tipping off the fork lift if they anchor on (when they!)
the pallets get picked up / delivered by a truck, 1 driver with a tail lift and pump truck and handled by fork lifts in the wharehouses, so it needs a pallet type bottom. the driver will take it to the door of a club but he isn't going to be interested in lumping it up any stairs.
or just speak to any of the big haulage firms in your area as they usually do a groupage service but you may need to make sure there's enough blokes about at either end to laod / unload the truck
good luck, stevie

Give these a try. They are one of the upn companies. I believe they give better rates for out of gague pallets. As said before, they will only be collected if on a pallet, and would only be a kerbside delivery.

I'm guessing that might not be cost effective

I'm just about to chase up some of these leads.
The table does deconstruct, so the size of the table would be 8ft x 4ft x 1ft (max). Then the peds & legs could be boxed into 2ft x 1ft x 1ft box. If that changes any of the comments or contacts.

WOW! Those tables are fantastic!
My husband bought me a full poker set for my birthday recently. Think when we eventually move some time next year or early year after, we'll be in touch for a custom table!
