Cool Some excellent model railways

For the more discerning geeks amongst us

I must admit that the thought of creating something like this really does appeal to me, I love the attention to detail and the 'roughing up' of all the trains.

Exhibition

As a kid, I loved this place. I could watch these for hours.

Roughing up = "weathering"

I've got an N guage track set up on the back of an old door. Its small compared to traditional Hornby but you can get more in a small space.

I don't have the patience to create this, and would not dream of "playing" with it lest I break/damage anything. Fantastic attention to detail.

Great to see and what skill and imagination - i used to do a bit when i was a kid, thought about it as a hobby and decided to buy an 80's trails bike and do it up instead, still looking...

Fascinating to see. I saw a S/H 16 loco Hornby controller on the market last Friday and was really tempted, but our house is just not big enough for that.

I got the Flying Scotsman and some other lesser Steam engine and coaches. I built a system with cars and stuff ...... took me a week (as my attention span canbe measured in seconds, it was quite a feat!).

I then sat there with the trains going around ...... I was bored rigid, it was the building of it which made it interesting. I sold it the next week ... lock stock and barrel.

I'm amazed at the attention to detail in those set-ups above ...... one does wonder if he has a job? a life? does he live at home with his mummy still? It takes a 'special' kind of person to do all that ... fantastic though it is.

I don't think the idea is to sit and play with it My Dad found the site as he's very interested in creating something similar now that he's retired. As a boy he was a train spotter ("it was more interesting in those days, the steam trains were things of great beauty") and hankers after a way to recreate a bit of that old schoolboy magic I suspect.

Me too. Although I kept mine. I have phases of interests. I've got a scalextric track in the loft that is half completed. I come back to them every now and again and do a bit more until I get bored and move on. I'll always come back to the same hobbies so I may as well keep what I have until its their turn again.

Someone once said its a trait of a Gemini to do this.

One of my Uncles was into this. The entire attic of his house was taken up with his model railway. Unbelievable detail. Spent hours up there.

I think in my lifetime I was only ever allowed up to see it twice.

Thumbs up

Scoobychick: point your dad at these two sites:

Building O Gauge Online - Home (tell him to have a look in the gallery on that one)

is an example of a loco made from an MMP kit. It has working lights, cab lights, authentic sound and even smoke.

I used to love the model railway at Alton Towers. It's long gone now sadly - see TowersTimes.co.uk : Alton Towers : Model Railway In my geeky youth I used to spend ages trying to work out the layout.

When I was a kid we used to occasionally visit a vicar who had a large model railway. He used to have evenings running it to a timetable with signalmen and all. Those were the days.

Not sure I have the patience and definitely not the time to build a model railway now. Maybe when I have retired and my daughter has grown up I'll have a go...

My dad, being an ex BR Steam driver,is well into this.

It was his dream to do that job,and after steam he lost intrest in his job apart from the Deltics now he plays in the loft with his Layout.

He handcrafts everything himself.

All rolling stock, and Loco's dating back from 1940's has box, pristine condition.

TBH some of the stuff he has,was valued at 2k last year.

One side of my loft is scalextric and the other is the N guage layout. One day I will finish them We'll probably move before then and I'll have to break them to get them out - unless the new owner wants to keep them.

What an engine sound those things had, we used to live no more than 500m from the ECML when I was a kid and you always knew when a Deltic was coming, you heard it about two minutes before it arrived, looked menacing too.

Note what's painted on the tunnel entrance "M Khan is bent", anyone living in the outskirts of North London during the 80's should remember this, it was everywhere on railway bridges and road bridges across the North Circ, who was M Khan lol

I used to be terrified of them! I remember standing on the island platform of Broxboune Station which is on the London to West Anglia Mainline when I was a kid. I'd cower in fear every time I saw one hurtling towards the station at what seemed like a kabillion miles an hour and run for cover, I used to think that I'd get sucked off of the platform as it passed

Obviously that was before my love of all things big, fast and noisy developed. Now if I saw one I'd get pretty excited and probably jump and down like I do when I see a fast jet flying at low level

Alcazar, it wasn't asked to get a bite, had it been I'd have worded it differently. It was a serious question based on what 'grown-ups' got out of toy trains and the like, that's all. I'm intrigued simply because I've never been able to get it.

Just found this site

Webbasierte Modelleisenbahn - TU-Freiberg - Interactive Model Railroad

Click on the layout image on the left. You can control the trains and watch them on a little web cam.

Deltics - what a noise.
(Class 55 for spoon )
Virtually gone are days when you see a british built diesel elcetric loco thundering along like that.
A product of a bygone industrial age

Nothing quite touches a merlin engined spitfire for noise. But an oily diesel thundering along took some beating.
