oak dining room table
#1
ok - once again i'll dip into the of wisdom that is scoobynet...
we've moved house and need a dining room table with some chairs. We thinking of a "antique oak" refectory style table - not quite 3 planks of wood nailed together with rusty 2 inchers resting on old oil drums; but more of the "rustic" look than a polished mahogany job.
Whats the deal ? Where's best to go ? buy new or secondhand / antique furniture shop ? What should i pay ? And how do you tell a good one from a duffer ?
I've seen everything from £3000 to £50 from loot, but all i really know now is that furniture is just another subject that i know nothing about...
Any oak refectory table enthusiasts out there ?

All I can suggest is look and keep looking (not very helpful huh?).
I was browsing a s/h furniture shop in Redhill. 99.9% total junk, and 0.1% was an oak refectory table 5' by 2'6", with solid and I mean SOLID (see the endgrain) oak top, an inch thick. I paid 120 quid. It's at my parents' waiting to be shipped here when I buy a bigger place, sorry you can't have it I think if I tipped it sideways it would stop a tank shell.
However, for weeks after that Friday Ad contained "Oak refec table, 200 pounds", "Oak refec table and 6 chairs, 300 pounds".
Good luck!

Hey James, where have you been?
I haven't been on any Clang'n'***** since my Prang'n' "*****!", I'm afraid I can't run that fast - I'm carless at present, though am looking to get a scoob wagon PPP in 3-4 months. With a little extra, I might add, which could get me ostracised from scoobynet through pure jealousy. My lips are sealed
You of all people may be interested to know that wifey wants an A-Class, so we won't be inviting you over here with your car
Tables advertised were s/hand in Friday Ad, the local (Surrey, Kent and Sussex anyway) version of Loot. I never saw the others, don't know how solid they were. All I can say is, mine is the nuts. What really annoys me is that I am now not in a position to get other matching furniture, as I would like, and all the stuff over here is mahogany coloured, which I find far too dark and depressing. My table is "golden" oak colour rather than ancient.
