Melatonin is supposed to help reset your body clock. Other than that, you just have to do things on UK time, eat go to bed etc.

It can take 1 day per hour of time change, so 8 hours could take you 8 days, so you're not there yet.

I fly loads- and eastbound is always harder than westbound in my opinion.
Sip water on flights, adjust your body clock in advance, change your watch the second you get on the plane.

Basically you need to force your body clock- TOTALLY knacker yourself out one night-
For example, go to work friday, then stay up this friday night until 6 or 7am on saturday , then get some sleep until the afternoon, get up, relax all afternoon and early evening, then go to bed say 10/11pm- will wake up on a more normal schedule on the sunday.
You have to force it and fight the urge to sleep when your body is telling you to- its not pleasant at first...

ps- flightman- thanks for getting BA178 down swiftly on saturday PM with a minimum of stacking...

If I remember, I'll have a look at the system tomorrow and see how long you were in the stack for.

bit late for my advice as I always stay awake for as long as possible after a long flight.

Last time I came back from japan it took me 16 hours and I left Japan at 9:30 in the morning, got back in Manny at 6pm in the evening and stayed away until 11pm.

Got up the following morning fresh as a daisy.

Bit harder the other way. Leave manchester at 6am, get to Japan at 9am. Staying awake all day until 11pm is difficult. But good nights sleep. No jet lag.

I think the keyword here, for me anyway, is exhaustion

Another convert Both flights were excellent thanks, Virgin PE was great, big seats, loads of leg room, excellent VPORT thingy and I LOVED the live flight tracker which I watched for 10 hours

Coming back, had dinner, settled down with my pillow and blanket, woke up seven hours later just in time for brekkie and to Bob saying "You've been asleep for HOURS!" Had a great view of the city coming in to land so I took a few hundred pics

As for jetlag, I'm still suffering, my body clock is fubared but last night I managed to get to sleep before midnight and woke up at 8am so better than the 1.30am - 9.30am the previous night I feel knackered again now though.

I used to 'commute' to Atlanta: 2 weeks in the UK / 2 weeks in Atlanta and then it went to 4-6 weeks/UK and 1-2 weeks in Atlanta.

I was usually fine going to America, being able to stay awake until 9pm-10pm and then waking up from 4am onwards and gradually increasing that until things were fine.

Coming back to the UK is always much harder for me, I have a tendency to not be able to sleep and stay up faffing around (on Scoobynet!) and then getting to sleep at 2-3am and then having to go to work the next day. What I found in the end is that if you force yourself to do some exercise and then go to bed you generally get to sleep and will get back to your natural rhythm.

I have tried sleeping tablets from the doctor, but didn't really get on with them. They just made me grotty.

Travelling east is indeed the worst, I once did a 7 day, four stop round the world trip going east, had to have a week off after that.

I used to be changing time constantly when I was on the VC10. It was very hard to get into it in the first place and in the end you only managed to just about cope with it. It is quite true that going east is the worst direction too. I once spent a week in Washington DC and came back to be put on a flight to Hong Kong. We were all the same crew and when we were doing the long descent into Kai Tak everyone on the flight deck was nodding off! That was the hardest one I did. You were permananently tired on that job.

Dont booze on/before the flight, knocks you out for a bit, then you wake up feeling rubbish.

Night Nurse is your friend, a capful of that will knock a Horse out, you wake up groggy but well slept.

Does anyone suffer dizziness with jetlag? I got it really badly after flying west and it stayed on and off for a couple of days, it would just come on really suddenly and make me feel awful. I thought I'd got away with it having flown back east but I've just had my first dizzy spell, I've been back three days so am not sure if it's connected

Personnally I think jetlag is a bit of a myth.

I used to fly west to Mexico and apart from not being able to sleep the first night I was there I had no other problems.

I now fly to Singapore and back every month and don't really feel any effects.
Then again I don't drink alcohol on flights, just water and OJ.
I do try to stay up the night before a flight so I'm knackered when on it and get a good sleep

How can it be a myth? It's fact, your body clock gets upset because you fly into a completely different time zone, that's jetlag. OK not everyone suffers from it to the same degree but changing timezones must have some effect.

I am an early riser and get up around 7am in the morning and go to bed at around 10 - 10.30pm (except when I've been at the JD ). When I flew to the States I was going to bed at 9 - 10pm and waking up at 5.30 - 6am every day for three weeks, now I'm back the first few days I didn't wake up until 9.30am and couldn't get to sleep until 1.30am which is unheard of for me. Five days later and I'm still struggling to wake up in the mornings, I managed 7.30am this morning but feel very tired.

Jetlag is definitely very real for me.
