buying back a written off car
how do you go about it?
the other halfs car (a corsa)was backed into by an 08 warrior pickup and it's done the tailgate but not smashed the window and left a few nicks in the bumper but nothing major, the assesor has estimated the damage at £1200 which i think will make it a write off, my thinking is get the payout and buy it back and fit a second hand tailgate and get the bumper done as and when. somebody has also mentioned that we will need a certificate to say it has been repaired and is no longer a write off so where do we get that from? also does it stay on the register as a write off or does it come off when we get this certificate?

One thing I read on another forum (so God alone knows how accurate it is) is that unless it specifically says so in your policy small print or you subsequently sign a fom transferring ownership, when they pay out on the car you don't have to hand it over to them as it is still your property so you get the full payout and the car. Although some policies (e.g. Elephant) state that the payout is conditional on ownership of the vehicle being transferred, this apparently does not apply in all cases so don't hand the car over unless you have to.

if your lucky they will leave the car to you to dispose of, more than likely cat c it making it need a vic check
when they call for an offer ask them what happens to the old car, dont offer to buy it back from the start, then play it by ear.
