SAT NAV under 60 quid
My PDA has packed in (cracked screen) so i'm on the look out for a sat nav. Just spotted this on the net. Never used one or know anybody who has. It seems very cheap, possibly to cheap. Anybody have any views on this ???

You can't go wrong with one of these for £50:
Navigo GPS Sat Nav - UK Maps - Full Postcode Search - 3.5" Screen ALSO plays MP3 & MP4 - Ebuyer
I have one, put a 4Gb SD card in it and hack it so it boots to Windows. You can run TomTom, MioMap, Memory Map and all sorts of other WinCE software.

Every cheap satnav Ive seen is a (relatively) low-end PDA running WinCE Core. Its not a particularly big job to delete the oem mapping application and instal TomTom. If you have a root about on t'internet youll find lots of site where people have TT5/6 running on cheap devices. Bearing this in mind Id buy the cheapest device you can find with a CE Core sticker on the back.

Generally pretty weak, the 'Turbo Dog' software that comes with the Navigo is described pretty well by its name . . . except the 'Turbo' bit. Having said that it will get you where you want to go, so not too bad if just used occasionally.
As mentioned the hacking is really easy, takes just a few minutes and isn't damaging.
My advice would be to get one of the cheap winCE based devices and see how you get on, you always have the option to upgrade to better software rather than being stuck with one on one of the more expensive devices.

Just reviving this for future reference..
Basically sat nav is only as good as the software it runs (provided it has a decent GPS receiver and CPU- which most cheap units seem to have). Therefore, a cheap unit that runs WinCE as it core OS can be made to run virtually any navigation software, be that TT, Igo, MioMap etc. What's more, they can be upgraded just as easily when a new version comes out. So you're not stuck with outdated maps.
The Navigo 3.5 currently available for £44 all in can easily be made to run any and more of the above software, so why pay more..?
You might have a £300 device that's running the same software as my £44 navigo, in which case they will both perform the same and make the same mistakes. The only possible advantage of the more expensive unit is a bigger screen and possibly better sound. But for me, both of these criteria are more than adequate on my navigo unit..
This is why the price of satnav's have been steadily dropping over the last 12 months, in an attempt to keep saps paying more than they need to..
