Would you want a 20 seconds countdown to disaster?
This morning, at around 08:37hrs local time, Japanese seismologists predicted, with a 20 second countdown, what turned out to be a fairly mild earthquake centred in Hokkaido. How cool is that Not sure how though
However, if it's 'the big one' on it's way, would you want a 20 second countdown to immanent disaster?
Having had the day to consider this question I've decided that I'd rather not know . 20...19...18...17...16...

Having been in Kobe, well Akashi City, when the Hanshin earthquake hit in 95, i'd want them to shout it as loud as possible.
We where in bed as it happened at 5:45am and it shock the crap out of our house, we lived not far from the epicentre, living close to the akashi bridge.
Our neighbours house was flattened, 4 dead, our other neighbours house partially collapsed killing the father and injuring the mother, 3 kids all okay though.
At least if there was 20 seconds it would give you time to get out of the house and into the relative safety of the streets.

However, 20 seconds would be about enough time for me to think 'OH S*IT' and freeze like a rabbit in the headlights.
I'm not sure 20 seconds is enough time for a family to evacuate a home even when fully awake

I wonder if more people would be killed in the stampede than by the earthquake, especially in a tall office block as said above.

point taken if you're in a taller building, but when at home i'd still prefer the opportunity to try. Besides most of the taller buildings tend to be more earthquake resistant than the traditional style house. Or at least have the opportunity to prepare myself for it.

Look at it as development work. Next year they might be able to give you 5 minutes. Eventually it will show up in a Thomas Cook brochure. I would prefer 20 seconds. I reckon I could get a text off to a group telling them what I really think. God forbid that the quake wouldn't be fatal though!!

I think it depends what the warning is for really.
If its warning me that there is gonna be a nuclear bomb dropping on my door and there is no way that im going to survive then im not too bothered about knowing.
but if its a warning thats gonna give me a chance of surviving then hell yes!! even if its just 20 seconds to get under a strong table if its an earthquake!
