That amount of police are often using ANPR cameras to catch uninsured, untaxed, un-MOTed and stolen cars.

A good use of police time IMHO.

Those using ANPR are a valuable tool ( not just tools per se) against the lowlife scum that think its ok to drive around in cars without any form of roadworthyness, insurance etc. cuasing misery for those of us that look after our vehicles and pay through the nose as it is already, for the priveledge (sp)

I've seen occasions of them using that many on the A19 near the Stokesley turn off.

I would much prefer to see more traffic cops about than scameras which are there only to make cash out of us. The cops would at least catch the uninsured, drunk or stoned drivers.

I'm sure you'd think so if you got burgled.

Whoa....heavy, Les....I'm just so totally spaced out by your comment.......fancy a Kit Kat?

Agree btw. Saw a few ANPR cars (evo 9s) out in Essex the other week.

Had a chat with one of the policeman. Very nice guy, and interested in my car (not for dodgy reasons!): joked that they'd had to get Evos to catch Evos and Scoobies. I pointed out that he had the 260 and he'd need a bit more than that to catch a light classic Impreza, running....oh, about 340! ANPR catches the disqualified and uninsured scum who stick two fingers up and the law and the rest of us. Bloomin good thing!

I have to think that it must've been an ANPR that was also looking for speeders at the same time (two birds and all that)

ANPR checks like that are a very good use of police time as the kind of people they catch also get caught for a number of other offenses. If they find knives / drugs / whatever they have a case for a house search and THAT finds other stuff as well.

the amount of low to high level crime that gets caught because of these checks really make them worthwhile

All in my humble opinion of course

Definitely an ANPR op, there's nop need to have the intercept cars there for speeding.

As stated ANPR ops pick out uninsured, untaxed, disqualified drivers, and cars with information markers on them, like burglars and drug dealers

You have GOT to be from Nottingham....

Back on subject - those ANPR traps are amazing things to see. They set up on the roads into Derby and one of the favourites is round a 90 degree bend when you have NO way of spotting them and no way of avoiding them.

Of course they attend burglaries its all part of the duty. I can see it now 'oh im sorry a normal plod car is unavailabe but we have a traffic car who could be there in 1 minute but he's currently cruising for a bad bad motorist'

Ludicrous

Quote on Traffic Cops the other night was that there are 1000 less Traffic Cops now than 10 years ago.

We probably have 40% more vehicles, more dodgy foreigners, more uninsured and more drunks. But NO! Expensive CCTV is the accountants solution though whilst the remaining Traf Pol deal with drunken Chav's brawling

They generally don't attend anything other than traffic incidents as they work on a different radio channel to the local police so don't hear the local stuff.

RPU(traffic) oficers have the car radios for pursuits and for quickly checking cars on the PNC as the operator uses 'dedicated' pnc.
Their handheld radios will be tuned into whatever area they are on and some will be listening into other areas on their partners radio.
If an immediate responce/999 large scale disorder/break in progress/firearms job comes in,it goes over the car radio-YM in west mids,YK in west mercia and the controller will ask if anyone can respond. The job is then switched from the YM/YK controller to local units to respond if appropraiate.
Panda cars also have the same radio as traffic cars and can listen to the same jobs(Airwave).
Hope this clears things up...
Oh...and any decent RPU officer will definitely attend none traffic jobs as most are/should be pro-active and crime orientated. You do still get a few old scholltraffic bobbies though

I've never known a traffic unit turn up at anything other than traffic incidents. And only then, big ones, after they have been called up.

Depends on the force and area they cover.

Most calls to local units come via computer to the treminal in the car for Met Police.

The Police are adopting a very poor approach to policing....catching speeding motorists should be a very low priority, compared to REAL crimes, but a disprotionate amountof police energy goes into policing the speeders.....

Its just a matter of time before the Police completely alienate themsleves from the law abiding folk in this country.........and then there will be fun and games when nobody likes or trusts the police........

I can only talk from 11 years experience.Speeding just doesn't rank on the radar-nobody is interested. The Police in West mids dont get counted on how many speeders they get-average of four arrests a month as a minimum.BUT,if you dont manage this, you dont have to go out a grab anyone for anything -its a myth.
Yes,you will have a monthly ANPR but this will be to target dizzy drivers,no insurance, burglars and bag heads out earning.Even when the ANPR van is out,no one cares about speeders.
Only areas of serious and fatals would get the speed gun treatment and then its advice up to a limit and a three point thereafter.
Its all about catching burglars, robbers and PPO's-prolific priority offenders i'm afraid and its the only thing that floats my boat.
i hear time and time again about the Police just targeting speeders.Well if thats the only thing that you can target, its a sorry state of affairs.
I will say though, that the pressures on new(probationer) copers is immence. They WILL be expected to issue a certain amount of process and get a certain amount of prisoners, which is unfair.
And they are told not to make the tea anymore as its called "bullying".Character building and being part of a team i call it,but thats another story
Hope this helps people

Depends on the force.
In the smaller ones they'll all be on the same channel for whichever part of the county they're in.
And they do attend non-traffic jobs.

What he said - one above this one lol

The scum are the only people targetted in my experience - no one else.

Speed cameras are a govenment initiative so slow down for them - they're usually painted bright yellow, you know

As I said, different forces do it differently.

Traffic in London wouldn't risk having to get their pens out by attending the usual 999 calls and being 1st there
