Marks and Spencer are good for £500, but for £5,000 you can expect a money market rate Paul. When I imported cars I always used the HSBC as even for £1,000 you were getting within half of one percent of the market rate (massively different to the tourist rate). This was for a telegraphic transfer of course, but Id expect the same principal to apply.

I always used to walk into the exchange and tell them how much I'd want to exchange and ask them what rate they would do.

If I was happy for that amount, I'd book it and make the exchange a few days later.

Thanks Simon, but do you need a, HSBC account? I'll have a look at that.

I opened a simple savings account and used that for every transaction.

Nationwide flex account, used abroad, converts the local currency to £ at the exchange rate, not the tourist rate. In the US, that's an extra 10c odd per £.

Best to go to someone like Moneycorp for that amount.

Give them a call and negotiate.

euro conversion - currencies exchange - euro rates - Caxton FX Shamelessly copied from another thread: the rates are excellent though (not quite as good as the moneycorp ones, but within one Cent).
