I think good private plates can be quite impressive.
Its when people change spacings, and bolts and use extremely tenuous links between letters and numbers that they look ****e.
Tidbit, a good freind of the family called John S, got in a bidding war for the number plate JS1 and eventually won. (this was about 30 years ago and ended up paying 15 grand for it - Probably about , what, £80,000 in todays money?)

Also, someone out there has "my" number plate...
B12ANT - is owned by someone out there.
(despite my earlier claimed dislike of changing numbers to letters)

They do look good if not messed about with, as you say.
Altered spacings, coloured screw heads, squared off numbers just tell the world that you would like to afford a proper plate but cannot quite manage it.

Could have been I guess, but that's exactly what it looked like......actually it looked more like the excat B word but BA57ARD was the only combination I could think of.
If you've looked it up Snazy, try BU57ARD.
