Which is what my zim gfriend has been saying they should have done from the start ......( well,to avoid violence - and presumably hope he keels over as soon as poss)
Should the UN be allowed in with/without SADC approval - she just tinks this will lead to more violence cos after all they just another european/yank organisation bent on looting the countries resources in p/ex for some aid

It's all very sad for the people who stood up against Zanu-PF and were tortured or killed for their troubles.
I thought Mugabe might have taken the safe passage exit option which was offered to him. Surely it can only end in civil war now but what's going to happen when he completely runs out of money to pay the army and police?
Or a bullet as said? dl

I can't help feeling very saddened by South Africa's lack of involvement in all of this. SA has now had 14 consecutive years of ANC rule. As we know from our own governments, such uninterupted power by 1 political party always appears to corrupt. Why else is Mbeki so reluctant to criticise the mad old coot? Surely the time for the softly-softly approach is over now: Mugabe's had it far too easy from SA and look where it's got him.
What happened to the much-vaunted Rainbow Nation of the early '90's?

Unfortunately I think Civil War is the only way it can go now
By forcible evicting farmers and farm workers and handing those lands over to 'war veterans' (i.e; murdering thugs) who have not the first idea about earning an honest living, Mugabe and his henchmen have turned what was one of the most successful economies in Africa into a wasteland

Wow, never underestimate the power of Scoobynet! Mbeki must have been browsing here yesterday and (purely as a result of my above post ), he must have decided to finally let the ANC break their silence on the Hitler-tached dictator...

As ever, it will be up to the people of Zimbabwe to sort out. One of these days they will do a Ceauscescu on him. Trouble is they cant beat the army at the moment. When he pops his clogs, the generals will either find another leader or someone will start a takeover. At the moment he is living on his reputation as the man who got the country back from the white man. No one is going to do too much at the moment with the threat of having your eyes gouged out or your tongue cut out etc. anyway.
There is a danger that this sort of despotism could spread to other countries too!

Every one says don't invade but UK forces charged into Sierra Leone and were seen as heroes and I think West Africa forces went into Liberia and sorted out Taylor IIRC. Food for thought. dl

Well everyone's favorite ex-terrorist Mandela's had a go this evening, they've finally stripped Bob of his honorary knighthood and cancelled the cricket tour.
It's a start. SA is the key to the whole situation.

Yeah, like just what happened in the Balkans right?
Your Zim g/f has every right to her opinions in this country without risk of a severe beating, torture or exection by the gov't. She can waltz down to tescos and take her pick of foods from the world over without a wheelbarrow full of worthless notes.
Either leave the place well alone or go in there and sort it out. Personally I'll vote for not hearing anything about Zimbabwe, and denying all immigration from the place. They took their own road when they wanted Mugabe over the British.
Given that the country hasn't got the resources of somewhere like Iraq, I can't see what looting the west can do, especially when (if believed) there is widespread local support for regime change. Also, it's not about aid, it's about trying to restore the health and wealth of a country decimated by a class A w@nker.

hey im with you at least 85% of the way ! ( theyd have taken anybody over the white man i suspect ) Actually they have plenty of resources ,but more relevently they are an ex-colony ; she could indeed waltz down to Tesco and pick-up what she liked if she were allowed to work as she has for the last several years and not kept doing f.a.(mybe for years ) whilst the english government decides what to do with her in light of whats happening back home and her zbc background - as she says if she were a rhodie shed be in
