Default I've been done over by PayPal- how to handle?

Any ideas on this one?

I sold some goods on ebay, received payment by PayPal, and posted them out.

I received an email from the buyer next day to say he was very pleased with the item and that it worked perfectly.

Buyer also left feedback on ebay saying the same.

A couple of days later, he claims that item does not function after all, and that he wants to return it- swiftly followed by a PayPal dispute, which he escalated to a claim.

PayPal emailed me last week to thank me for agreeing to accept the return- which I didn't. They have then refunded the buyer!

In my mind the buyer has bought my unit as a replacxement for his, which was damaged, then returned the faulty one. Either that or he's fitted it wrong and broken it in the process.

How on earth can they simply ignore the email and feedback left saying its perfect and side with the buyer? Furthermore, we have some 800 positive transactions with paypal, and 2000+ 100% feedback profile on ebay- where as he has zero feedback rating!

I have to say I'm not real impressed...

Good old paypal strike again.

Vote with your key pad and don't use them.

yep, dead right. we've used them for several years and haven't had any significant issues.

There was a rumour a while ago that ebay were going to insist that everything went through paypal- which is what they've done in australia.

Any news on that? I'm not sure their greed will do them any favours.

eBay have been forced to suspend that plan - The Register

You cant win I'm afraid. Similar thing happened to my brother. Sold item, posted by special delivery, guy received, left good feedback. Then claimed his money back through paypal. My brother had to send information to paypal including the receipt for the special delivery. Surprise surprise they found that the buyer was right and f*** the seller.
They are criminals.

an idea is to always use a uv pen to mark the item and take a photograph for your records then you will at least know if you get the original one back, just a thought

If i sell on ebay and get payment via paypal i withdraw it straight away so pp can't take the money from the account.
If there was a problem i'd just send payment from my bank through pp.

i'm not sure what happens if pp want to refund a buyer if the seller hasn't any balance in their account - surely they can't take it off a credit card without permission can they?

They simply pass/sell your 'debt' to a debt collection agency.

If you have bank funding set up they'll pull it out of your account, but as suggested above, then its the debt collector.

I must admit though I can't see how they are technically able to decide a 'substantially not as described' dispute- which are the grounds cited for refunding my buyer... nor am I sure that its legal for them to act in that manner.

In the case I mentioned above, the buyer said to paypal he didnt receive the item, so it was totally clear cut. We could prove he had it and he had left feedback saying he'd had it. But NOOOO paypal still stole the money and gave it back to him.

Paypal are thieves, simple as that

I do tend to use it when buying on ebay but never use it as one of my payment options when I sell

Sort of off topic, I got a message from ebay the other day saying that I can no longer leave negative feedback when selling too

+ If you now list items on a computer that you don't usually use, Ebay will now phone you to confirm that YOU are listing the item.

You must have a delivery address. Report it to the police - they do deal with these matters - my mate's a copper and she's sorted three ebayers out, two UK and one international.

Failing that, get the SN lynchmob together and go visit the git
