Could a bloke drive around in this? - Classic SL Merc
I think this looks fantastic and seems a bargain. But could a bloke get away with driving around in it? I'm not talking about posing around town with the roof down and shades on, more like runs on country lanes type stuff.
What are people's thoughts?
Mercedes R129 SL280 Convertible Auto, FSH, No PX/Swap on eBay, also, Mercedes-Benz, Classic Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 06-Jul-08 11:00:00 BST)
Seems to be very few convertibles that us blokes can drive without having people question our sexuality

I would say yes, that one is mint and these were the best built Mercs ever.
Ok, not the fastest but it would be quick enough and as he says, comparatively less ruinous on fuel.
That advert is an example of how things should be done, detailed without waffling, good English and spelt correctly, brilliant photos and its clear he doesnt deal in rubbish.
Car even seems well priced. That is tempting, I am not doing much driving these days and dont need something that economical, and I love old Mercs.
Anyway, who cares what anyone else thinks if you are enjoying driving it.

These are a "MANS" car.
just need's 2 changes..
The AMG alloys on them with the low profiles & that cherry red needs to go!
Gray or Black then we r talkin...
Over all one of the best

Dont know if they did silver as an option, but that would definitely be preferable for me.
Anyone want to buy my scooby?!

And you think a 280SL is going to be good on fuel
The 6pot SLs can barely drag their own weight...consequentally can drink it down almost as well as the v8s
5speed autobox on the newer models did help make things better though

Sadly my scooby is currently immobile due to no mot and the need of a TB change. I'm not in a position to move quickly if I decided to change it
I've kind of lost interest in it, hence I couldn't be bothered to re-commission it after the winter lay up.
Good luck with that coupe, looks superb

Beautifully constructed and written advert, which makes a change
No, they're OK cars. Not my bag, and, as has been pointed out already, the wrong colour, but they're not really that gay.
Just a bit

If you're man enough to begin with the colour makes no real difference. The only thing that would stop me is the engine. It has to be at least the 500 before I'd give it a second thought.

You'd be lucky to get over 20mpg from it. I've had loads of mercs with that engine and they all guzzled. The V8s are usually similar in MPG returns.
Beautiful car though.

Used to have this 500SL a few years back.
Bit of a ***** magnet.
Get the V8, sounds glorious, goes like stink. Fuel is ridiculous in anything these days, may as well be hung for sheep as for a lamb.

I tried the 500 new against a 928S4 and chose the latter but at 25 the Porsche also had the edge at the time.

With prices as they are and with really little difference in fuel consumption between all 3 in the real world, I'd always have to plump for the 500 and never contemplate smaller, though the 320 has to be a step up from the 280.

Me too. The boxy ones really did have an air of tankmanship about them
I had a hard top off one of them fall on top of me (was propped against a wall)....I was trapped underneath it until two guys managed to lift off me (it really is that heavy ).
Plus never like the matt/gloss two tone jobs on the mid 90's mercs ...first thing I'd do is get the sills done in gloss to match the upper body.

Great modern(ish) classic and deffo a chaps car. the best thing is you could be a millionairre or a office worker, who would know unless parked outside your council flat or it had been drug dealer specced with chrome arches (to cover up the rust).
I would have one, these days - only thing that would put me off would be the MPG. Might get one as a second car when we move.

The 2.8 only produces 150 bhp, you need at least the 3.2 and that would be slow. You had a look at the Bmw cabriolets of similar age yet ?. The 328 is much faster than the Merc and buy the manual version ( more mpg ), if you want a cabrio.
