Default Japan quake - Not a great way to be woken this morning

Pretty violent rattle this morning.
There have been some fatalities, some amazing scenes on TV news
Roads have been completely buried by landslides. A fair few people missing.
One mountain road in Iwate that I drove last summer has completely dissapeared, the whole side of the mountain just fell away.

Amazing pictures. Only in Japan would you get just a handful of deaths though. What time did it hit?

Are quakes a fairly regular occurrence in Japan?
I'm off to Tokyo next April with the kids......

08:43, at least that's what my alarm clock was showing!
I needed to get up for the loo in any case

Shame that there has been any deaths at all, still several missing, but as you say 'only in Japan'. If a magnitude 7.2 hit most anywhere else in the world the casualties would have been much greater.

But in all seriousness, I really am coming to Tokyo with the kids next April, on our way to Hawaii

And I'm glad you're okay, but a shame about those who died.

Glad you are all alright, and very sorry for those who suffered.

It must have been pretty frightening, I have experienced a very mild tremor comparatively speaking and even that was frightening.

Enjoy your visit, I'm sure you will, and don't worry about earthquakes.
Although Japan exepriences several thousand earthquakes a year, you'd be fairly unfortunate to be a victim.
I've been here for 6 years and have had only two or three really scary quakes. The 'normal' ones are exciting in a strange way
Always wondered what it would be like if had one while 'on the job' if you know what I mean

On the "rim of fire" quakes are "normal". But you never know if it's a big one or not. I used to live in Wellington, NZ, at least 2 quakes every day but 3 or less, not felt at all, just on the drums a the observatory. Having said that though even small-ish ones like a 5.5 ARE scary! You just do not know!

Keep on going and when you've finished ask if the earth moved for her too?
