Tanker driver strike to go ahead
BBC NEWS | Business | Tanker driver strike to go ahead
The government said this week that some petrol stations were likely to run out of fuel, but urged motorists not to panic-buy.
Looking forward to this!

The companies had offered a pay rise of 6.8%. At the start of talks on Thursday they put two new offers to the Unite union.
They offered an increase of 7.3% backdated to 1 January 2008, which the companies said would take drivers' average earnings to over £39,000.
The firms also offered a further 6% increase from 1 January 2009, which would take earnings to about £41,500
That's not a bad deal on the table ....... I doubt they will get much support from the general public.

The company is pulling a fast one here, the average earning figures are including overtime (ie 48 hour week on average).
Unless you actually do the job and know what the going rate is I fail to see how you can comment on whether the strike is valid or not.

According to you though Pete £39k is not a living wage, £50k is the bare minimum

But, I wasn't going to mention that on this occassion - as driving a Tanker is considered an unskilled, labouring, type job ...... for which £39k is not a bad wage and the public, in general, will probably see them as being greedy.

But common sense falls well short of the mark!!!
Degrees are ten a penny now thanks to the dumbing down at nulabia
charted status isn't all its cracked up to be either.
You seem to forget you can be a charter member or a degree holder with,
the bare minimum marks required.
The real talent dosent go into the state run / funded organisiations, they set up on there own or work where the real money is ie private!!.
prhaps you need to give your son a bit of schooling in real world mechanics as opposed to state funded fairyland
Mart
BTW back on thread, the tanker drivers get my support. anything that causes this useless bunch that claim to be feeling our hurt, some more grief the better.

I say good luck to them,if they can get the pay rise they are asking for.I fail to see how anyone can say, that driving a tanker full of fuel,on British roads is unskilled.Your basically driving around with a bomb that could go off if you get something wrong. Not to mention the mental strain it must have driving for hours each day or night and remembering every little safety procedure you need to do..These guys may not have DR before there name, but they have to sit tests and pass exams just the same,as some snotty student whose been at uni for the last 6 year's.And after passing some degree, will end up stacking shelves at Tesco..

I'm behind the tanker drivers as well.
At todays press conference, GB was asked by the Observer chief political reporter what he was doing to help people who are being crucified at the pumps.
His reply started " We've increased the winter fuel allowance "
The guy is to put it simply, a f@cking moron.

oh and to add, the drivers could be shooting themselves in the foot as the contract for shell bulk fuel deliveries is actually under tender at the moment so I am sure this protest wont look to good for their company.

As for the independants getting to the picket line, talking to the "hard done to" drivers and turning back - shame on you...
I just hope the nations plonkas dont panic buy and cause problems anywhere close to the strikes of 2001.

The TV News has been out looking for long panic-buying queues ..... and cannot find any!!
I'm thinking that the public may actually be acting sensibly this time? Time will tell - but, it's only the Shell stations isn't it?
Most of us would agree that they are being greedy ...... they say they have not had a proper payrise for 15 years - so, 15 years ago they were on an inflation adjusted £39k a year??
Pure greed IMO

Tankers are very hard to drive because of the weight displacement as they are emptying, I think they deserve 39k as there is quite a lot of specialist training involved! Also it is quite a dangerous job, you all remember Buncefield?? Buncefield investigation - Photos

Somehow I don't think that argument will gain much public sympathy..
I think the firemen who were at Buncefield do a much more dangerous job, and drive vehicles that are difficult to drive (and at high speed)... they didn't get what these tanker drivers are on now in their last strike, nevermind another 5-6K on top...
I wonder what the milk tanker drivers think to all this too....

Well I'll admit I don't have all the facts but, some of the quotes are strange.
As far as I can tell they earn 32k a year. They want more becasue shell are making bumper profits. But they don't work for shell, they work for a shell supplier.
It's no different to any lorry driver saying I want 10% of the profits your store make from the goods on this lorry.
Also the despute doesn't say it's not a skilled job. But there are many skilled jobs, some pay more some less, it's not a secret when you take the job. If they think they can get more doing another job ...
