My X5's value has not changed that much. I knew it would depreciate badly when I purchased it but I forecast 5k-6k a year and so far I have not been disappointed. Not quite sure of your point when a large majority of drivers on this forum drive Impreza's that are bad on Emissions and fuel and in the current climate are suffering as much as 4x4 drivers.

With less 4x4's hitting the second hand market it should help prop up the used values

I'm temted to buy a Landcruiser just to tell them where they can stick their misplaced ideas and sneaky tax gathering efforts.

As someone said,'when I heard the Chancellor talking about plastic bags in a budget,I lost the will to live'

1999 Jeep Cherokee (See my profile)

£1500, 66K, good history, electric everything, decent power (can light up all 4 in the damp ) looks mean and parts are cheap as chips.

Average 18mpg. Double it if its LPG. £200 to tax.

The OP is PSLewis, so the purpose of his post is fairly obvious!

£5-6k is a lot to write off a year, as you have to earn about £9-10k before tax to cover that.

I've always liked X5's.

Wouldn't mind a 3.0D version. If they drop like a stone, they could be a bargain. Could live with £400 a year tax if I save thousands on the purchase price.

Does anyone know the average mpg on the 3.0D?

They have already reported that cars like that are becoming less popular and therefore the prices are dropping in relation to smaller cars.

I part ex'd it a month ago for an 07 reg 535D at a main dealer so I know exactly how much it is worth and how much they were reselling it for. After 7 days returned the 535d as I discovered it was a very poor write off repair when the rain stopped falling. Dealer had owned the car from new and lied when I asked about accident history.

The X5 3.0D does 21 mpg around town compared to the 535d's 18 !!!!

I'm sure there are valid reasons, but given that MPG, why on earth would you buy a diesel? I mean thats M3 levels, and given that even Vpower is at 5 p alitre less than diesel and 10p a litre less than v-power diesel, I can't see the logic in buying a diesel car unless it is returning a decent MPG.

How on earth are you driving it? My uncle has a 535D and he reckons to get around 29-30mph around town and upwards of 45mpg on a run.

Best place to judge is the auction. The place was stacked with 4x4's. I recall a couple of X5's going through at £7k and one at just over £8k.

Depends on the model. Range between £40k to £55k before options (and those can add another £10k onto the price if you want)

Mine was 50k new with 13k of options. MPG is terrible but Mrs Doo uses it for the school run 1 mile in traffic, slow dive to Tesco's, and across London at 15 MPH to visit her parents.....If I drive it at night I'm upto the 28-29's but I'm quoting what we get to a tank in reality rather than making numbers up. The 535d 18 MPG was a week doing exactly the same driving. I was very surprised it was worse than the X5.

Reason we got an X5 is because that is what Mrs Doo wanted. It is her car....I just pay for it

Try a petrol X5 if you want bad economy.

I'm surprised as well. I'd get it checked if I were you. Sounds like something isn't quite right.

Me, I'm happy with my 120D. Not managed to get it under 43mpg yet (around town or on a run). Usually average around 47mpg, and have got it as high as 54 on a run. It's fairly nippy as well

Seen some go through 7k but on a Y and 3 litre petrol models. I did see some Rangerovers and Landcruisers go through at alot less than the CAP price but the cheapest cars I saw today were 04-05 plate of those ugly renaults with the big ****. MOst went for 3-3.5k. TT 180's were worth 5.5k today as well.

My X5 manages between 28.8 and 33 mpg depending how it's driven. Mostly rural driving, best I've ever managed on a 60 mile journey was 36 (dogs in boot) It's the E70 model with the 3.0 diesel twin turbo.
Most economic car we have

Its complete crap I know.....You think the car does 0.5 to 1 mile from cold not exceeding 20 MPH, with constant stop start, 20 times a week. 2 kids, different school times. Then to Tesco's 2 miles away stuck in permanent traffic with stop start. Then 30 miles to the in laws and back in solid traffic.

In the X5 the fuel gauge dips below the 8 mpg when pulling away and it is either stationary or below 10 mpg on the school run. On a good motorway run it will return above 30.

I agree it is a rubbish car to own in London but she wants a 4x4. I tried to get her in a 325d but nope nope nope.

I'm amazed at how many 4x4's their are on the roads, considering fuel costs have been high for the last 5 years or so (only recently gone to crazy high!)

Used values are obviously going to be hit hard - I expect a lot of people will get a shock when they 'try' and sell. At the end of the day there is little point driving massive 4x4's around when you never do any off-roading....

Still alot better than a 05 STI PPP.

Just to see............ I've driven around for 10 days trying to drive off the Turbo, just to see what I can achieve with my daily driving to work & back. Been changing gear between 2000 - 2500 revs and sticking to between 55 & 58mph on the dual carrage ways. OK it's only 10 miles to work, and 10 back, but I tanked up tonight and got 26.78mpg Was hoping for more, as driven normally (steady to work, brisker back) with between half and full throttle driving, I normally get bewteen 20 & 22mpg.

Can't see the point now in taking extra care for 4-5 extra mpg.

More shocked that a big heavy X5 can get 28-33mpg driven normally.

You can't?

Let me help you - 5mpg more is a 25% increase - the same as paying 90p per litre instead of £1:20.

Let me repeat what that means - today you pay £1:20 and tomorrow the forecourt price goes up 25% to £1:50 ....... now can you see the point in saving 5 mpg?

Yes but you look like a complete Tw*t in an Impreza being out accelerated by a 1.1 Peugeot.

I'll cut the full bore accelerations back a bit. Sometimes anyway

Only because you THINK that you do ....... look at it this way, you are at the lights and alongside is a Ferrari Testarossa, you race off from the lights and the Testarossa slowly accelerates behind you. Do you think the Ferrari driver looks like a complete tw*t?

Of course you don't!! It's YOU who has screamed off who looks the tw*t!!

Just because you drive an Impreza does NOT mean you have to drive fast!

sorry ped, thats a stupid comparison. being out accelerated by a testarossa is an honour while being out accelerated by a 1100 pug is wrong. whats the point in having a car like this if you dont give it a squirt sometimes? you may choose any of your aliases to respond to that question, the answer will be the same

Surely the point here is, if you have to drive an Impreza slowly to improve fuel consumption, you shouldn't have bought it in the first place.

I just wanted to see what could be achieved if driven off the Turbo.

I've tried. Seen the results. Won't try again.

Mine got 15 on average trying to conserve petrol. When I first got it and was trying to see how fast it went I got it down to 7mpg. This was a petrol model though.
