Went to Yeovil today....
Down the M4 (at 75 because of the speed cameras)
Off at Jnct 17 down through Chippenham stuck behind lorry after lorry
Through Melksham, Westbury, past Warminster through 30, 40 and 50 limits, line markings preventing overtakes, dual carriageways reduced to single carriage ways, or dual lanes (60mph) with speed camera warning signs.
Onto the A303, my nav beeping speed cam warnings at every crest or corner, stuck behind car after car crawling along at 65-70.
Return was the same, next time I buy a car I think I'll be skipping the 0-60 time, no point in having anything fun

It's a nightmare in that part of the world. They've marked down nearly every speed limit possible, camera signs everywhere. Went from Dorchester to Minehead a few years back, a total nightmare with these changes. For several junctions on the M4 they have vans on the overhead bridges as you mention.

It's bad over there for sure.... I've lived here for 18 mths and just don't see speed cameras. Work is out in a works van so am on the road all the time far and wide.
When I drive to Dublin for the ferry back to England 2 hr drive and only pass 2 speed camers which are in the south and are covered in moss and undergrowth - never used.

I don't see many static cameras further south. The police over there do have mobile laser equipment purchased from the British police though.
I've only seen one mobile trap in Tipperary.

Just as bad in some places. IIRC there is a police force that doesn't used fixed/van cameras.
