I've done it for years....

On the day of departure just turn up an hour before the flight is due to leave, go through security, grab a magazine and it's time to board the plane.

the only time to check in before leaving is in Florida when you can goto downtown disney and not see your bages again until you land in the UK thats when it works well.

I check in online, thats worth doing, might be worth doing it the day before if you have ski's, golf bags or loads of luggage, say one member of the family checks it all in the day before to cut down on aggro when the kids are there ?

Day before baggage drop off is really designed for people with overnight layovers/connections, who don't want to schlep all their crap to their hotel/mates house for a few hours. Makes perfect sense...but then its a risk that they get lost overnight really.....braver than me to do it at heathrow.

I very very rarely check any bags now, and if I do, its normally a very small one. Can do ten days with two carry on bags, and that includes laptopin one of those too.

My usual routine:
-Online check in T-24- print my own boarding pass in case of delays en route.
-Turn up at airport 1.5-1hr before departure with two carry on bags with what I need and none of the crap I don't, and no checked baggage.
-First class/gold desk for boarding pass ( self service machines always eat my card or give an error!)
-Fast track security (not always so fast...)
-Have some food and a drink in the F lounge, and sometimes a snooze if ive come straight from a gig (and yes, ive had to be woken up in the lounge when ive slept right through boaring announcements and alarm clock on phone...doh)
-Wait for lounge dragon to call flight pre boarding, walk to gate, normally get there just as boarding started, fast track boarding gate (sometimes...if they bother to open it)

At JFK its particuarly quick- can do taxi to eating in lounge in about 7 mins including security. Did taxi to stepping on board plane in 4 mins once when I was VERY late and had printed my own boarding pass and ran...

Done it with Virgin for years.

Check in the night before, stay in hotel, walk to plane in the morning.
Brilliant way of flying.
